I was sent €5000 by mistake

    Have a car loan with KBC and received a letter saying the load is cleared and the balance remaining of the €5000 has been credited to my current account(€700).

    Called KBC and the guy on the phone sounded a bit confused, eventually came back and said the €5000 had been transferred my mistake and would I transfer back the €700 if he gave me an IBAN. Waiting for him to call back with IBAN now.

    All seems a bit messy, should I be asking for any written confirmation I sent money back or as its all electronic now that's unnecessary?

    Don't transfer to a random IBAN. I know you rang them, but even so, I'd ring again, and make sure to look up an official number rather than ring a number you might receive on a letter telling you to contact them. Not necessarily advice for your situation, but for others who might be in a variation.

    The iban the money came from should appear on your bank statement, or at least your bank should be able to confirm the originating iban.

    I would only return the money to the originating iban and make sure you put a meaningful reference in the description field.

    This could very well be a scam.

    Maybe you called the number on the letter your received which could be a scam. The payment into your account could be automatically reversed shortly.

    If you send other money to a random IBAN, you will be without that too.

    You have informed KBC of the mistake, let them fix it themselves from their side. Don't transfer any money yourself (and don't spend it either)

    I know you want to be helpful and there is probably someone in KBC having a panic attack about the missing 700 ... But there are also too many scams doing the rounds and you don't want to be the next victim.

    DO NOT TRANSFER ANYTHING... let the bank sort it out.

    Recently I was given access to a HUGE amount of money on a bank here in the states. Well in excess of a million dollars. As it happens, i know of the party involved (same name as myself) and phoned their offices to instruct them of same.

    It is a bank issue, let them solve the issue. You could be down money of you meddle in this.

    Ya something strange going on alright he said he would ring me back with IBAN but did not.

    What should I say exactly i don't feel comfortable transferring the money back myself I'd prefer the bank to sort it?

    To be honest I'd leave it for now.

    You have flagged the issue, they have the means to reverse the payment out of your account let them go down that route.

    Otherwise let them send you a formal invoice for the repayment.

    Confused, title says you were sent 5k, then you say 705.73.

    Then the guy on phone says, 5k was sent by mistake, but sure just send me 700 and we'll call it a day. WTF

    The balance would have been the balance on the loan account which the can presumably back out easily.

    I read it as €5K was (allegedly) transferred from somewhere, by someone, to his loan account, it was used to clear the loan and there was €705.73 left over, which was then sent to his current account. Now they want that sent back.

    It all sounds well hooky though - I'd do nothing. As others have said, if it's their mistake, let them reverse it. I wouldn't be going out and blowing the €700 either though! Make sure to leave that in your account so if it does suddenly disappear you're not overdrawn.

    They sent €5000 to my car loan account. Balance of my car loan must of been €4300 so balance of €5000 was sent to my current account.


    I'm assuming they have easy access to the €4300 as that was my kbc car loan account but obviously don't have access to my account with the €700.

    Hold tight for a bit until the money is well cleared in your account. There is a variation of a scam where when selling an item, someone agrees to buy it but accidentally overpays by cheque. They then ask for the money back and you then return it. A couple of days later the payment/flagged is flagged by the bank and instead of clearing it is all removed from your account and you are down the money you returned.

    Car loan balance is minus 4300, they sent 5000, so plus 700 was in loan account, so the sent 700 to current account, so loan account is 00.00. Still means you need to send back 4300, and 700 so that the loan account returned to minus 4300, not 00.00 as it stands now?

    Sounds like a scam, what you see on your screen isn't real, it's a fake shot, seen this before.

    You have been compromised, you need to see what's real and what's not. Heard something like this on radio, guy is on his bank account online, and the screen he is looking at is just a copy, and an amount looks like it was added to his account, so he is asked to transfer that amount back, which he does, and then the scammer clears the fake shot of the screen of the amount, so guy is certain he sent it back. When in fact all he did was send a large amount from his own money to them.

    ask them to send you a letter to confirm what has happened, what they are doing to rectify the problem and how they are planning to prevent its occurrence again in the future.


    For the repayment of funds, ask that a wet ink signed letter is sent to you at the address they have on file for you to give instructions on which kbc account the funds should be returned to. do nothing without a wet ink letter.

    It means a named somebody has to sign it physically and send it to you by post.


    They should get your details from their system to do this.

    The person should then be reasonably checkable by you independently (eg LinkedIn/social media etc).

    And it buys you some time to be sure this is genuine and not a scam.


    You then have written details on where to send the money back, on headed paper and signed by a named individual. Even if there is a scam, you would then be entitled to your money back as it's fraud, and banks are covered for this.

    Independently get the number of the KBC fraud helpline - it’s on their website and will also likely be on any official written documentation you’ve received from them previously. phone them and tell them exactly what’s happened- they’ll sort it.

    there is absolutely no situation where you would have to send money online from your account to another one as a result of a bank mistake- absolutely none whatsoever. The bank may need your authorisation to take money from your account but they certainly wouldn’t need you to make the transfer yourself.

    do nothing - as in,do not send money to anyone.wait for the bank to write to you which they will.ring them again to remind them of the error.now a wet ink letter is a new term for me.must have come from dr google.used to be called correspondence or a letter in the post.........................

    As others said you shouldn’t have to do anything to correct this yourself.?. I came across this myself occasionally while working in the bank in the 90s. What KBC should do is credit the original 5k back to the correct recipient, debit your car loan by 4300 and your current account by the 700. All is correct now from your end. They do have access to both accounts - they can debit bank charges etc or unpaid items. Really all they should be doing is informing you as a courtesy. It’s all a bit odd.

    Guy on the phone said it was sent by mistake so surely not a scam?

    I'm sure if it was a scam he wouldn't be calling back with an IBAN, he'd be giving me the IBAN there and then.

    I think he asked for my name, DOB and my monthly loan repayment amount to confirm my identity.

    Ya but the scam in this could be the far side so to speak.

    The bank can see the money coming into you but this money could be automatically withdrawn if found to be from a fraudulent source.

    If you in the mean time decide to send 700 of your own legit money to some other account you will be at the loss of it.

    Had a missed call from KBC today on number 01-6646100 so rang them back on this number.

    Guy again asked could he give me IBAN to send back €700, I asked him could he first tell me what happened exactly.

    He said someone just send money to my account by mistake.

    I told him I got advice and would not be sending the money back myself and I wanted KBC to sort it, he said he understood why I would not want to send the money myself and that KBC would sort the issue themselves.

    He then said my car loan was overdue a direct debit payment and I should make it manually and gave me an IBAN, also a note was added to the account explaining the missed direct debit.

    After phone call I checked the IBAN of my car loan account and it was different then the one he gave me so rang them back.

    Guy explained the IBAN I was given was a Ulster Bank holding account KBC use for mortgages and car loans and I should use this to make the direct debit not my car loan IBAN.

    I asked for someone to ring me again to explain everything as this is very messy.

    Ulster Bank are buying the KBC loan book so that explains why they have a different IBAN for your car payment.

    Just wait for them to sort it out. They will eventually get their money back, banks are good at that.

    None of this makes any sense. How can your loan be sent money and they are noe asking you to sebd money to another account?

    I would be either

    1. Call KBC customer care yourself and ask what is going on.

    2. Do nothing and see what happens.

    Pause for a second here....


    After refusing to pay €700 euro back to an unknown account, based on advice you got, they immediately dropped the request for this......and they can now suddenly sort it!! Why ask you in the first place then?

    And the immediately they just happened to request another large payment to another IBAN number that you have no record off...?


    This could all be legitimate, but to be honest there are several alarm bells ringing here now....

    How was the Car LOAN DD missed, Was there not enough funds in your account or is it due to this load switch between banks and the IBAN changing?

    Did they know the exact amount of the DD? Can you see yourself it is missed in your account?

    Not sure if he said I missed the DD or I just needed to make it manually for this month while they fix my car loan account.

    No plenty funds in my current account, I should of asked why they can't just take the funds from my account as usual as put it into the holding account themselves.

    Question, off topic/ Credit Card receipts from stores.... the merchant copy, what should happen that copy?

    Surely these receipts shouldn't be just put into recycling,

    So called contactless payments, lolz, eh yea all the details are on the merchant receipt, all your numbers, expiry, security code.

    I DON'T GET IT. Surely there is laws regarding the disposal of merchant credit card receipts ?

    Hi guys,

    Was finally sent a letter from my current account bank PTSB saying they have received a request to recall a payment from my account.

    Only weird think is it says on second line that I am(as in me) requesting the money that was sent to my account be returned to them.

    Should it not be KBC or the guy who mistakenly sent the money should be requesting the money?

    I have attached the letter below, the name blanked out in the second like is my name.

    Would everyone on here be happy to send the money back now?

    It has your name on the loan account where it came from so that's why it's like that I'd say. Seems legit.

    Could it be that the person recalling the funds has the same name as you and that is the reason for the mistake initially.

    The key to this is not to send funds back yourself and that will be paid with your legit money while the other funds you got in could be recalled any day and you would then be down the recalled amount plus the amount you paid out.

    Tell the bank, to reverse transaction.

    Nope.


    You aren't requesting anything. Tell your bank you didn't request this


    Make them do it right. If anything goes wrong here if your name is the requestor you are to blame, not them.


    DD missed is their problem. Resubmit and it'll be claimed ok.


    You shouldn't need to do anything to fix their fck up


    Check the credit bureau afterwards that your credit worthiness hasn't been affected. If it has then issue letter if complaint outlining what you want them to do to resolve it and by when. If they refuse complaint to ombudsman. (Probably do this in any case).

    Could I get in trouble the longer this drags on, not sending the money back? Someone told me the money in my account is not mine so technically theft if I touch it.

    The payment is in your account for more than 5 days, therefore it is cleared funds and therefore your bank simply requires your permission to reverse that payment.

    I can't see how. As long as you don't spend it and ask for reasonable assurance from the bank as to what went wrong and how THEY intend to resolve the issue then I can't see any comeback on you

    As and when you are satisfied it's not a scam and where funds should be returned then return funds (less any reasonable costs you incur as a result of this incident) then no problems.
