Replace cylinder, change to combi system or something else?

I have a leak in my hot water cylinder coil which I have lived with for a while but it is now causing problems with low pressure and my boiler (natural gas) is not working most of the time.

It will cost 600 euro to have a new cylinder supplied and fitted but I am wondering whether I'd be better spending more now and switching to a more efficient combi system.

The current boiler is a Mynute 16e so somewhere between 11 and 19 years old. Small 3 bed house with 7 rads but with a ground floor annex with 3 more rads, so ten total.

Im thinking of zoned controls especially as I am letting the annex in the future. Two bathrooms: The shower in the house is a 9kw electric and in the annex a simple shower/ bath tap unit (but pressure is decent).

At least some of the rads need replacing so I am looking at a few grand to update the system... and then Im thinking how long will a natural gas boiler be a good option with the move to heat pumps etc. ... and back to considering the shorter term fix and seeing how the technology has developed in 3 or 4 years.

So going round in circles. Any suggestions?

Cheapest option is replacing the cylinder.

Doing a combi boiler correctly isn't cheap. If you have a power shower in a plastic box like a Mira Event, triton AS2000XT or Aqualisa Aquastream then these might need to be replaced if you go with a combi boiler

I'd replace the cylinder & leave the boiler alone if it's still working ok. Heat pumps are the way forward in the future but you need an extremely well insulated home for a heat pump to be able to heat your home correctly

Thank you. The shower is electric (Triton t90sr) fed from tank rather than a power shower so not affected.

My house is flimsy early 80s build and I reckon it would take a lot of work to get a high enough insulation level for the heat pump.

I'd replace the cylinder. I'd keep boiler till it breaks. I'd then still replace it with another gas boiler. Eventually there will be a cut off date where gas boilers can no longer be sold. I would buy another one just before this date.

The above thoughts might change if the government give massive grants for insulation and heat pumps
