Out of interest, what could cause a false positive antigen test?

Still waiting on my PCR results, but today I feel fine, slightly stuff up sinus like my folks (who have both tested negative and had head colds). So I have spent the day in my room...I really wouldn't do well in jail.

The instructions say to wait 30 minutes after eating / drinking / chewing gum. Acid / Citrus can cause false positive.

    But other than that... dunno.

Ah...well no point worrying now, just have to wait for my PCR.

I'm picking the 10 days of isolation from my test. I'm assuming I picked it up a couple of weekends ago, I only started showing symptoms on Wednesday and got my test on Thursday. So it was 10 days from last Thursday for me.

Ah yeah my symptoms started Sunday, my was test Monday so I just isolated from Sunday, I'd a negative PCR Friday and sick Sunday, I must have picked it up before the Friday but not sure

Tested positive this evening. Was vaccinated with the Janssen one shot in July. Symptoms started on Monday and include a fever, aches in my back, blocked nose and slight cough.

Also tested positive on New Years Eve last year.

I thought getting covid last Christmas and being vaccinated would be the end of covid for me. Fed up of it all at this stage.

Day 10 and got a negative antigen test.

    phew.

    Got my positive PCR today.

Only bad symptom is the loss of smell and taste really. I have a stuffed up sinus but that is all, not pain anywhere, the odd cough. I really thought I was getting a head cold.

Did a PCR test yesterday as was a close contact. How long before you get the result normally? I presume positive results are fast tracked as have heard nothing yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 481 ✭✭discostu1

We finished our isolation on Monday, a family of 5 all adults. All fully vaxxed in fact I got the booster about a month ago, very similar to Franks symptoms about my wife was sicker and fatigued for about 2 days but the we were all flying by day 4

Its normally 24 hours but as all the labs in ROI are working at full capacity due to the surge in the Omnicron variant.

I just got my PCR test back 1 hour ago, had the test done yesterday at 08:30am.

Do you mind me asking if you were positive/negative?

Referred for HSE PCR. Got it yesterday @ 13:30. Result to phone this morning @ 10:55. Negative, thankfully.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,982 ✭✭✭kravmaga

Lab report just states the following, SARS CoV-2 RNA RT-PCR - Detected

Does not say whether its the DELTA or OMICRON variant.

I had to use a private company Vilda care as I spent 3 hours on Wednesday trying to get an appointment on the HSE self referral website, kept on getting error messages. The HSE PCR system is not working, no appointments , error when you try to select a slot.

Tested 10am yesterday positive result last hour (as expected had two positive antigen)

The text says ten days from now

The website says ten days from first symptoms which was Tuesday

    Which is it ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,397 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

My question exactly. It also says you don’t have to isolate if you don’t have a fever.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,530 ✭✭✭Naked Lepper

For symptomatic covid case you can use the first date of symptoms as the time to start the 10 day clock.

the text says 10 days from now (safer option assuming you are not symptomatic)

I used the HSE website for my PCR test. I had no issues. There were 0 tests for the day I wanted but I had a good selection for the following day. No complaints with the process from me.

Got tested yesterday around midday. Partner 5 mins after me. She got her result (positive) about 2 hours ago. Still awaiting mine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,244 ✭✭✭munsterlegend

Got tested at 2 yesterday and still waiting for my result. Must be a big number to get through.

Interestingly, I also got a false positive with an antigen test (from Lidl). The only possible contamination I could think of was some shampoo suds from a shower I had just beforehand. I did some sussing afterwards online and LFT false positives don't seem that uncommon, it's just that the media always focuses on the false negative stats.

Started on the Previous Friday we were tested on Friday we got several texts from the HSE Id have to root them out but thats my memory

  • 2 positive antigen results for my GF. 2 negatives today for me. Both feel fine. Rang my contacts from today as I delivered presents to my godson and visited a close friend.

Have cancelled hotel bookings for a wedding I was supposed to attend next week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,028 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

If those are antigen positives you might have jumped the gun, see discussion above on false positives... would defo be worth pcr confirmation even if private.

If it was pcr positive hope its a mild dose for ye.

Just to add my Brother in Law had 2 positive antigen but the PCR was negative now I think thats rare enough but it can happen

  • I agree. I was motivated by the fact that it xmas eve and difficult to get a PCR on the HSE website and my hotel cancellation is up to midnight tonight. Would have been E400 out of pocket so had to make a call on it.

The risk is super high for everyone at the moment.

7 year old daughter neg antigen yesterday, pos this morning.Assuming she has it as she has some mild symptoms since Wed evening (hopefully they stay that way), and there are 5 cases in the class to date this week.Damage was done last week by the first case, child went home unwell on Friday (no blame attached), and one of the five cases definitely came from a household transmission, so no odds whether she was in or kept home this week, it would have happened. Not a PCR test to be had anywhere so we are just gonna enjoy the day tomorrow and try and get them as soon as something becomes available.Feel I may have it as have some symptoms this afternoon.

Slightly relieved as, while it sucks, we are home for 2 weeks entertaining the kids anyway, and we had really no plans, bar family on xmas day, which we now won't attend. My daughter will be out of isolation before the holidays end and I would have endured untold stress worrying about catching it and passing it on over the holidays, so I am happy to stop having to try and dodge it.My only hope is that none of us gets too sick, and that we all get it so it is over with.

Day 5 isolating here. Have failed an antigen every day since Tuesday evening.

I’ll be up in the box room for Christmas and tbh it’s ruined it really for everyone.

symtoms are very mild since temperature dropped back to normal. Failing the antigen emphatically. No doubt at all that it’ll show up after a few seconds. Seemed to take longer on Tuesday.

Do they send out results past 9?

Did your symptoms only start Wednesday so. I’d say it’s very likely to be positive in that case.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,453 ✭✭✭wolfyboy555

Just got text. Negative result. Not that it makes much difference with partner being positive regards restricting movements.

Antigen tested positive Wednesday and Yesterday. Went for pcr yesterday 8.20am, awaiting results still but almost certain will be positive.

Self-isolating, it's horrible but a small bit of comfort that alot of others in similar situation.

Why are you thinking of going for Christmas dinner with symptoms and positive antigen tests?

Pretty sure the HSE says, even if you get a negative PCR test, you should continue to isolate until 48 hours after symptoms go away.

For anyone still waiting for a result, I did a test at 4.40 in Rocdoc, HSE centre in Cork and just got the result. Negative thankfully after 2 days in isolation. 3 members of my family down with covid so Christmas cancelled.

Happy Christmas everyone. We'll have to make the most of it.

Sorry, should have said 4.40 yesterday. Can't find the edit button on this new platform?

Was tested today around 3.30pm but am not expecting a result until the day after tomorrow going off how busy they are and timelines here. Better to not be looking at the phone all day tomorrow though, as it took around 24 hours for all my previous (negative) results texts.

Symptoms are not as bad as they were during the week, thankfully, but still have some sort of a dose.

Started Tuesday with a sore throat. Was very very ill on Wednesday; constant shivering and sweating, (no temperature at any stage, if anything a bit low), breathing laboured at times, bad cough, very sore throat, sinuses blocked, fatigued, unable to eat and aches and pains. Also felt very nauseated in general all week

I'm lucky in that nothing has changed for me christmas-wise, I live alone and had nothing planned, so business as usual except for having to have shopping delivered if i can during next week if still symptomatic regardless of results.

I really feel for anyone having to stay in their room, change plans last minute, or miss out on seeing loved ones.

I'm really hoping for Omicron to be the wave/mutation that weakens and 'normalises' the whole lark. Here's hoping.

Depends what day you were trying to book the HSE self referral PCR test portal, I spent 3 hours trying so did my close contact, error message kept coming up on the screen when I tried to select an appointment slot.

So we both had to go private, we have both since tested positive results back with 24 hours. HSE PCR self referral site was under pressure last Wednesday am all day due to the sheer volume of traffic. Im self isolating now, mild symptoms

Some good news, test at 1 yesterday, negative result via text from the hse at 12:38. Seems they are testing away and trying to make Christmas for people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,397 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

Day 5/6 for me and my body feels completely fine, but my sinuses are clogged up, they are beginning to empty today though, so my nose is passing all sorts...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,880 ✭✭✭DeanAustin

Got official confirmation this morning. Been isolating since Thursday as knew it was coming. Sadly, didn't get to see kids today. Was only due to see them for 2 hours but sad I missed it.

That said, I took a bit of a risk last week (within guidelines but was still a risk) so I can't really complain or feel sorry for myself. Feel rotten that I've made their Christmas less happy.

Up at midnight for the second night running to try and get PCRs.Loads of appointments became available, but the texts with the validation codes never arrived.I got one test for the one child who has tested positive on antigen. The rest of us I have now booked for a private test tomorrow, although they are few and far between too.Pretty annoyed about it all, but I am not spending a third night trying to book tests at a silly hour.

Next When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,

And the road you're trudging seems all uphill,

When the funds are low and the debts are high,

And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,

When care is pressing you down a bit,

Rest if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,

As every one of us sometimes learns.

And many a failure turns about

When he might have won had he stuck it out.

Don't give up though the pace seems slow,

You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than it seems

To a faint and faltering man.

Often the struggler has given up when he

Might have captured the victor's cup,

And he learned too late when the night slipped down,

How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out,

The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,

And you never can tell how close you are.

It may be near when it seems afar.

So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit.

It's when things seem worst that

    You musn’t quit.
