Men of the moment: Ahead of International Men’s Day, nine famous faces give their take on what being a man means in 2021

Its never taken seriously this day, scorn to outright hostility is often the response.

The day should be important though, to highlight issues men and boys face. Such as male specific cancers, underperformance of boys at school, mental health, unfair divorce outcomes, access to their children, jobs and promotions where straight white men need not apply.

But we are just not there yet, still far too much feminism left to do apparently. More diversity needed. Hilariously diversity in this country often means more women. Look at the farce that is 2FM these days. Its a wall to wall line up of white Irish women.

.....That's my little disjointed rant in before the thread is locked and deleted.

    Topic

    'Turning It Around'

    Description

You are invited to register for a place on 'Turning It Around' - a webinar to celebrate International Men's Day 2021 (which is held annually on the 19th of November).

This event has been organised by a consortium of organisations from across Northern Ireland, and will feature inputs from ex-professional soccer player Paul Ferris, and former Co. Armagh GAA star Oisin McConville.

    Paul Ferris

Paul was a teenage prodigy, becoming Newcastle United's youngest-ever player in 1982 - only for injury to ensure his promise went unfulfilled. He later returned to the club as a physiotherapist, before earning a Master's degree and beginning a successful quest to qualify as a barrister. But the lure of football was always strong, and he went back for a third spell at Newcastle, as Head of the Medical Department - again working closely with a host of big-name players and managers. Paul also became a successful novelist and now runs a health and fitness business. His books focus heavily on the life-changing challenges he has experienced in his life, and he writes openly and honestly about the hurdles he has faced and how he has fought to overcome them.

    Oisin McConville

Oisin was a winner of six All-Ireland Senior Club Championships with his club, Crossmaglen Rangers, as well as the sport’s top prize - the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship - with his county team, Armagh. Despite enjoying a glittering career, Oisin developed a gambling addiction which nearly cost him his life. Hitting rock bottom, he spent 13 weeks at a rehabilitation centre in Galway in 2005 - the first step of a journey of recovery which has raised the profile of gambling addiction in Ireland. Oisin has since helped hundreds of athletes in the UK and the Republic of Ireland as a trained Addictions Counsellor and much sought after public speaker. He has also worked for Sporting Chance for many years as part of their gambling education programme.

The national charity that aims to reduce the misuse of alcohol in Ireland is urging men to protect themselves against harmful drinking.

Men are more than twice as likely to report binge drinking as women, and Drinkaware is calling on men to be aware of their drinking and how it impacts on their wellbeing and the wellbeing of those around them.

The charity is making the call ahead of International Men’s Day on Friday, with the theme being “making a positive difference to the wellbeing of men”.

Work did a podcast there today with their Equality council and it's about 30 minutes of how men need to be better for women. Usual stuff like toxic masculinity being bandied about and how men need to listen more. Pretty insulting tbh

anyone listen to maraid ronan today. stats off saying she didnt even know there was a mens day. sorry but you have been involved in radio for 10 years or more how could you be that stupid or under a rock that much.

then proceeds to start talking about how women should be more like men and be selfish rather than selfless and it would do them some good .

i wasnt in the mood to listen to such bullshit so i turns it off

Fair play to you OP for making such an effort to start a positive discussion on this topic.

Unfortunately, I'm not surprised to see it being left to yourself apart from a couple posters focusing on women today while complaining that they focused on women.

Some simple steps from WHO to consider for anyone who wants to be proactive in their own care.

For me, being physical active is one of the best things anyone can do to promote overall general good health. I find it fantastic (necessary) for good mental health and when you are doing it, you are more conscious of the impacts of smoking/eating unhealthily etc or trying to do it with a hangover and so you start to pay more attention to those factors as well.

I means it says a lot that the official theme for this year is Better relations between men and women. The day itself is about how we interact with women rather than male issues.

But , if most men were honest (those that know about it) what man really cares about it ??

Only took the second reply for someone to start moaning about women.

I know International Men's day still garners much weaker support (from men themselves, ironically) than it should - there are so many important issues facing men and boys these days including all this insulting and patronising narrative in recent years from radical feminists who, at times, seem to want to rid the world of men...

But men themselves need to look at what they can do to articulate their grievances with respect to the appalling child custody/separation/divorce outcomes and supporting International Men's Day would be a part of that. Lack of access to their children by spiteful/manipulative ex-partners is very toxic to men's mental health and drives men to suicide and addiction. Also the shameful under-reporting of female on male domestic abuse (and same-sex male on male abuse). I know guys who are - or have been - in this nightmare situation. A friend of a good mate is a victim of domestic emotional and occasional physical abuse from his wife. People tend to still laugh at supposed "weak" men who are in this situation and it keeps the silence, shame and abuse going.

I myself was involved in the Mater Foundation Dickie Dips in 2019 and 2021 where 600 lads of all ages, shapes and sizes braved the chilly Irish Sea in our dickie bows (gotta look dapper!! 😄) and our birthday suits for prostate cancer treatment fundraising. Some of the older lads in our group are prostate cancer survivors themselves. Lads, if you're 45 and over - get your prostate checked out!

We collectively raised over €130,000 this year and are aiming for even better in 2022. Was so pleased to have been able to take part this year! 💪💪👍️

I hope - and expect - International Men's Day go from strength to strength in the coming years.

    fair play to you .

if i went out in the nip it would raise more laughter than money.

your right that men need to do more to raise our issues

but sadly our issues are mocked or pushed aside and not taken seriously . the media has a huge problem with mens issues and takes every opertunity to false report the issues , twist the states into womens issues , or just ignore them altogether or release other news to drown it out.

look at what the media does for womans day. its a week long event will all sorts of debates and stories ranging from huge medial issues, to smaller scale issues raised. no issue is left behind .

on mens day we cannot even get any of our big issues talked about seriously let along smaller issues.

    look at this.

National Adult Safeguarding Day - 19th November 2021 | Social Justice Ireland

a day launched to highlight vulnerabe adults. seems great but why put it on mens day. its an issue facing both genders. its obviouslt going to get twisted to being about womans issues and take away from mens issues.

its just another level of disregard for men and our issues. and an atempt to ruin any attempt for us to highlight them
