Replacing light switches

Hi All I have 4 switches that all activate the same two lights . I was changing the face plates and of course now im having some issues and was wondering to start troubleshooting should each switch work on its own ? As in if i leave 3 of them disconnected and just one connected , should this one switch work on its own ?

No. All 4 switches will need to be fitted and wired correctly for lights to operate
you will need 2 x 2 way switches and 2 intermediate switches for this.
