Ohio Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for Federal Hate Crimes Related to August 2017 Car Attack at Rally in Charlottesville, Virginia

James Alex Fields Jr., 22, the Ohio man who drove his car into a crowd of counter-protestors at the “Unite the Right Rally” on Aug. 12, 2017, killing one woman and injuring dozens, was sentenced today in the Western District of Virginia to life in prison for his crimes. Fields previously pleaded guilty to 29 violations of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, 18 U.S.C. § 249, for the attack.

Violent actions inspired by such warped thinking are a disgrace to our people and our values, and the Department of Justice will not tolerate such depraved acts,” said Assistant Attorney General Eric Dreiband. “Prosecuting hate crimes and acts of domestic terrorism continues to be a top priority for the Department of Justice. Anyone who commits a crime motivated by hatred for the race, color, religion, national origin or other protected trait of any person should be on notice: the United States government will use its enormous power to bring perpetrators to justice, and we will continue to do so for as long as it takes to rid our nation of these vile and monstrous crimes.”

“On August 12, 2017, this defendant committed a hate-inspired act of domestic terrorism that killed 32-year-old Heather Heyer and injured over 30 peaceful protesters,” U.S. Attorney Thomas T. Cullen stated. “We believe that his life sentence furthers the Department of Justice’s substantial interest in prosecuting hate crimes and protecting the civil rights of all Americans. We are grateful for the dedication and hard work of the FBI and the Virginia State Police in investigating this matter and bringing the defendant to justice.”

From the videos I've seen of the drivers actions in Wisconsin the following can be asserted.

The driver of the car could have turned off any one of several streets to avoid the parade.
There is no attempt to apply brakes to avoid people who were marching on the street.
There is no attempt to advance warn pedestrians by using a car horn.
Mr. Brooks was identified by witnesses as the driver of the vehicle and photographic evidence shows this as well.

It is obvious this is murder and the initial charges reflect that.

Where this becomes an election issue is the perceived and actual breakdown in law and order in recent years and the stance of district attorneys (DA), the question has already been raised in this instance. The perception is that Democrat run cities are soft on crime and this view is shaped by the video evidence of open looting in cities like San Francisco, Chicago and New York. This has the potential to trigger a major split in the Democrat national congress between the ideologues who permit this and the mainstream voters who do not condone it. If you look at the New York Times video above you can see that Democrats were codifying 3 strikes and out in response to voters.

The question voters will be asking their elected officials is why was Mr. Brooks allowed to go free? At what point could he have been stopped? Those answers are not coming until after the trial, unless he pleads guilty that will be next year in time for the US mid-term elections. Law and order becomes a bigger issue for US voters.

The censorship of the identity of the suspect initially in this case on left wing media after the defamation of Kyle Rittenhouse last week should hopefully open peoples eyes to the media manipulation over there.

You may want to re-think this. There is no reason the same event with a vechicle cannot happen in Ireland and it already has. There are obstructions on pedestrian streets in Ireland and across Europe to stop lorries mowing people down.

We have only escaped mass killing in this country previously due to other peoples intervention before the trigger was pulled. Many years ago we narrowly avoided a Dunblane type incident in this country.

You may know guns were available to both sides during the troubles and used for mass killing. Knives and cars are readily available for such a purpose.

In this country the actions of drug dealers with guns and knives account for most of the dead or injured being from within that circle, there have been people killed or injured due to mistaken identity or caught in the cross fire. The killers even cross state lines.

There is no reason a mass shooter, mass knifing or use of vehicles in a mass killing cannot happen in Ireland today or in future. The chances of a successful mass killing event in Ireland increase as the population increases, we will not be able to rely on the social customs of a homogeneous population in future to prevent this.

American culture dominates world-wide, and especially in the Anglo-sphere (Canada, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland). It influences us directly whether we acknowledge it or not, it is queitly building Starbucks around us. . . .

The outcome of Irish referendums is shaped by American culture.

The Only in America argument does not really hold, culturally we are locked in with them and have been for many decades now.

We already have so called academics in Ireland labelling us as racists and their bile is published by newspapers, media outlets and websites.

Hell look at some of the posters on here with their American identity politics and buzzwords.

We already have had a black guy shot by Gardai and the immediate claims by some, including politicians, was it was the same as US with white police killing a black man.

We have other areas where US thought is now being pushed.

In a thread about taxing the mega rich, you had posters parroting the US mantra (might as well have been a Republican party rally speech) about not taxing the mega rich as they deserved it and had accomplished the dream.

Talk to kids today and they talk about cookies, driving semis, bro.s, boomers, etc, etc.

It is Americanisation on a massive scale not just through TV and movies, but through youtube, tiktok, facefook, instagram, twatter, etc.

You talk to anyone working for major US multinational and they will fill you in on the diversity training, the pride events, etc, etc.

It is all American bullcr** and the last thing anyone needs is to go down the failed American polarisation road to ruin.

Social media has done the exact opposite. Their own algorithms are designed to trigger negative emotions as it garners more facetime and clicks for their platforms. This is well established and a huge problem that global societies are going to have to tackle head on.

Leaving aside for a second that in many cases where people suggest someone is searching for racism I don't believe that that is the case (although it does happen sometimes of course), which is worse; searching for racism where it might not exist? Or ignoring racism where it probably does?

And, not to preempt your answer specifically, but I don't think they are equally the same. While somebody may have to defend themselves against an accusation of being racist, it should be possible for them to do so in a way most objective observers will accept (even though some probably never will) but to ignore the presence of racism allows even tentative racist acts to be tolerated and to become some sort of norm and to be very impactful to peoples lives even if it never extends to the point of them being called the N word or similar.

I understand, but don't know the full detail, that this person was fleeing a crime already committed and so it would seem to me their motivation was to escape that scenario rather than having specifically gone looking for a crowd because of hatefulness and bigotry.
