    Antares is coming within range of the C3 camera and changing position from left to right of the stationary Sun due to the orbital motion of the Earth-

    It shares the same arena as the planet Mercury as that planet travels behind the Sun and furthest from the Earth presently as seen from the Earth tracking satellite. Antares changes position in unison with the other stars so easy enough to distinguish a planet from a star using this basic principle.

    Antares means the 'rival of Mars' and easy enough to see why.

    A split screen showing the live view of Mercury on the opposite side of the central Sun as it moves from right to left is accompanied by graphics representing what the observer is seeing would be helpful. Scrolling the dates forwards and backwards helps students understand what they are looking at from a satellite tracking with the Earth as it runs a circuit of the Sun.

    The few simple steps which recognise the annual change in the position of the stars due to the Earth's orbital motion sets the Sun up as a stationary reference by which to interpret the motions of the other planets. As the tracking satellite is free from daily rotation, the RA/Dec framework is no longer applicable as the background field structure serves a different purpose in this new approach.

    The Star of Bethlehem


    The significance of a star in the East had only one meaning in antiquity from an observational perspective. There is no way such a description could designate a specific location in the Near East and generally speaking, the traditions of Matthew and Luke using the infancy narratives are meant to satisfy the antecedent Jewish prophecy.

    Everything to the left of the central/stationary Sun is an evening (West) appearance while everything to the right of the Sun is a dawn (East) appearance. As the Earth runs a circuit of the Sun, the stars change position from an evening appearance to a dawn appearance or from a West appearance to an East appearance, however, they are lost to the glare of the Sun for a number of weeks and cannot be seen.

    The first seasonal appearance of a star and specifically the brightest star Sirius represented a milestone in antiquity and noted within one of the oldest traditions in the Bible as the star Mazzaroth-

    " Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?. Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons? Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?" Book of Job

    The first seasonal appearance of Sirius/Mazzaroth/Sophet is the basis of all human timekeeping and far older than the Egyptian account-

    ".. on account of the procession of the rising of Sirius by one day in the course of 4 years,.. therefore it shall be, that the year of 360 days and the 5 days added to their end, so one day shall be from this day after every 4 years added to the 5 epagomenae before the new year" Canopus Decree 238 BC

    There is this wonderful NASA-ESA satellite with a camera tracking with the Earth through space with a focal point on the stationary/central Sun that goes almost unnoticed.

    Just as the magnificent Webb telescope is being launched and successfully deployed please God, the SOHO C3 camera will capture Venus passing between the slower moving Earth and central Sun as it does every few years -

    Sometimes it is just as productive and creative to look into the centre of the solar system where our parent star resides and gain just as much satisfaction than looking in the opposite direction. It is not for everyone, that much is clear, however, observers who make the effort will be rewarded with a new understanding of the solar system neighbourhood.

    It is wonderful to see that the Webb telescope will complete its deployment today just as Venus overtakes the Earth in moving from left to right of the stationary Sun as seen from a tracking satellite a million miles closer to the Sun-


    Venus is in retrograde motion insofar as it is faster than the Earth therefore moves faster than the change in position of the background stars as a consequence of the Earth's orbital motion. It fills in the gap which would normally be out of bounds for observers on the surface of a rotating Earth-

    We cannot look out towards the inner solar system where our parent star and the two faster moving planets reside so a remarkable satellite can do it for us -



    Venus moves faster than the change in the position of the stars so it would have appeared to all observers in antiquity as retrograde motion, at least when it was visible. Unlike the slower moving planets where relative speeds between the faster moving Earth and slower moving Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and so on caused the slower moving planets to fall temporarily behind in view require a fixed field of stars to gauge the insight, an altogether different framework is needed for the direct/retrogrades of Venus and Mercury-



    Those who have already come to appreciate what is in front of them can now come to understand why the perspectives between the faster and slower moving planets seen from Earth provided the first Sun centred researchers with problems and particularly as Tycho Brahe had Mercury and Venus run circuits around the Sun in an Earth centred system-



    I have resolved the issue using a contemporary satellite by changing the reference from the Ptolemaic framework where the Sun moved directly through the constellations to a perspective where the stars change position as a function of the orbital motion of the Earth thereby setting the Sun up as a central/stationary reference that it actually is.

    Although there is an enormous amount of work expanding out of this observational perspective, it is sufficient presently that the partitioning of perspectives depending on whether the other planets are moving faster or slower than our moving planet is enjoyed with familiarity.
