I planted some alstromerias in a bed this year for the first time and was delighted with them. If I leave them where they are, how do I protect them from frost ?

Advice generally seems to be apply a mulch. Does this mean I cover the entire plant with a mulch or just the sides of the plant ? Could I put a cover say like a flower pot over the entire plant or would this kill it , ie do they need light during the winter ?

They are such lovely plants but quite expensive and would hate to lose them.

Any advice to a complete beginner would be very welcome
