Labour cost for bathroom refurbishment

Hi. We got a quote for renovating 2 bathrooms. €4000 labour costs for each bathroom. €8000 in total for just labour alone. This seems really expensive to me. What do people think? Is that average these days?

Seems everything is high these days. Turnkey bathrooms are expensive.

You, unfortunately, are paying for a lack of earning during lockdown times.

I had the same issue recently. One man did about 1 week's work on my ensuite, and charge over 3 grand. Not happy as a lot of the work he did was sub standard.

I told him I would never have him back to do any work again.

Market rates are €500 a day for tradesmen at the moment so €4K for a bathroom is about right assuming strip out /plumbing /tiling / painting etc .Now that’s for tradesmen who do a high quality job with customer focus , invoice and after sales service not a one man band paddy in a hiace handyman

Fair enough. I'll start charging a no show fee for any time I take a day off work to accommodate any builder who then fails to turn up as promised.

365 days in a year, 104 days off for weekends, 30 days holidays, they only work about 200 days, say salary at 50000 so that €250/day. they don't have to pay insurance, provide tools, pay an accountant, run a vehicle totally for the job and plumbers would have to price jobs they don't get so those days pricing he gets nothing. Nurses and doctors are guaranteed work which is worth a lot

Not nonsense at all .yes it’s Too much money for a one man band but that’s the market rate in Leinster for real tradesmen. Good tradesmen cost money . Being a tradesman is a skill that not all are capable of . Again I’m not talking about handymen but a tradesman who is running his business correctly and providing a high quality service will charge accordingly.It’s up to the customer to decide if they want to pay it.

if you have tradespeople not showing up you are obviously dealing with one man bands and you get what you pay for .Contact a reputable established company , expect to pay premium rates and expect the premium service and you won’t have the problem of a tradesman not turning up for some silly reason or half arsed excuse .

Nurses. Most are shift workers, so will have to work to provide 24/7/365 cover. But let's go with your Maths. 365-104 = 261. 261 - 30 = 231.

Nurse salary starts at 35,000. Before tax. 35k divided by 231 = 151.51 per day. They also have to provide transportation to bring themselves to work, without the ability to charge it to their employers.

They also don't have to bear the risks associated with being self employed.

And lets be fair, They'd take a raise if they got it, Should the tradesmen cut their prices in solidarity with private healthcare workers? The issue is these healthcare providers charging a fortune and not passing it on to the people on the ground.

Serious by what standard? Soon as there’s a family emergency or they’re sick or the van breaks down , getting to the customer whos took time off to have the tradesman call to them is left high and dry .

unless you are dedicating your life to your business a one man band simply doesn’t have the time resources to provide the customer service most people expect .

Absolute nonsense, There's plenty of tradesmen providing excellent service, Any kind of service provider can have a van break down or a tradesman ill, and at the capacity most decent operators are working at, there won't be someone to fill in if there is a person missing, it'll be rescheduled.

I gave up carpentry a few years ago. Things went in a mess and I found work in a completely different area. I was self employed and sick and tired of chasing people for money.

Going by the above rates I should go back on the tools

It depends I think, In a case where it's a no show with no explanation then I'd be absolutely look to be compensated for a day missed from work.

For a genuine reason for cancellation I probably wouldn't, but that's just me, and I wouldn't be overly inconvenienced as I work from home.

Nurses salaries START at whatever but I bet the average at say ten years in is near 50000, also the term was nurses and doctors which'd put the figure well over 50000/yr. The guys that are charging 500/day had damn little for the last ten years whereas the medics had plenty for what we were going through, how many doctors and nurses traded up their houses when no one was able to buy them

nurses and doctors? With pay that could range from 31k (recently qualified nurse) to approx 250k (consultant) of course the average would be 50k per year. But then again, it would be quite foolish to lump them all in together.

Would it not be the same thing though if you went back on the tools? i.e. You can now command higher rates but if you aren't being paid for your work now there is really no net difference versus back then...zero is still equal to zero and you are left with the same problem and frustration?

Curious as to what type of customer it was that typically did not pay and your follow up approach? (and not by any means trying to imply that it did not happen) Was it for contract work you were competing in larger developments, be it residential or commercial? Or was it more in the line of smaller one of jobs you were completing? In my 20 odd years of dealing with tradesmen/ handymen on and off they were always paid when leaving the house after completing the work and payment in this manner seemed to be assumed and expected by both myself and the other party. Some would have being nearby neighbours and close family friends but my approach would always have being the same.

I am looking to get my bathroom renovated, its not tiled much, just a few around the top of the bath and of course on the floor. I am only looking for basic shower, vanity unit and toilet but want the entire room tiled(roughly 35sqm).

Ringing around I get told bathrooms start from 7 to 8k even without knowing what I want? If I could get decent furniture and tiles for under 3k how can they not be specific about the labour costs? Can they really say it doesnt matter how cheap the stuff you buy is we are not going under 7k?

Is it better to try get it sorted sourcing individual plumbers electricians etc.?
