Swifts/Swallows in December?

I have a two regular house martin nests on my house (they last from year to year, and the house martins come back every year and patch them up). I didn't notice when the house martins left this year, but they've been gone a few months.

Over the last month I've thought I've heard chirping, and noticed some droppings under the east facing nest (but wasn't sure if they were fresh). I was up in the attic earlier, and there was some definite chirping, and then I happened to glimpse 3 birds heading for the nest from a bedroom window. I didn't get a good view, but they looked more like swifts than house martins. I've never seen/heard swifts/swallows/martins here in the winter before - could they have got left behind, or blown in from somewhere else? If not, what other winter birds would take over a house martin nest?
