stay away from your GP .. if you can't breath properly call an ambulance and let the docs who have been treating it for the last 2 years decide on the best therapeutics for you

If you can persuade your doctor to give you a script for fluvoxamine (100 mg twice daily for 10 days) then that's worth a shot

It's an SSRI medication that has been around since the 1980's, safe and well understood, normally used for OCD and depression.

But good luck getting a doctor in Ireland to prescribe it for Covid I would say.

Mostly because the suggestion is there is not enough data on it, especially in light of its side effects. Seem to recall that the FDA wanted another trial as there were comments that the Brazil data might not be replicated elsewhere.

fluvoxamine has been taken by many millions of people over 3 decades of use and as an SSRI that would be long-term ongoing use - so a once-off 10-day course is even safer.

it's considered very safe.

now Pfizer's Paxlovid is more effective but that's not even available yet and that will be also very expensive.

Yes, but it is taken for another purpose entirely. The FDA still say there is not enough data on it and the Ivermectin nonsense means it really has to prove itself in the eyes of regulators. It is all banking on that big Brazilian trial. One article I saw pointed out that as it is off-patent and with multiple producers it makes it more difficult to get such trials going.

Here's some data from a Canadian group, who are now going to move on to look at combinations.

TBH I think the EMA, the FDA and regulators in other richer parts of the world will continue to ignore data on such possibilities, simply because we can afford the expensive pills specifically designed for COVID. With more pills and other therapeutics coming it'll need a lot of data to persuade them but you'd still like to see efforts continue on other options. This one IMO is a bit of a hard sell and patients could have some serious questions about getting an anti-depressant for COVID.

as a once-off course it's not going to have a long-term effect.

it's also as said been around for over 30 years and many millions have used it - it's a known safe drug.

but I already said that you won't get an Irish doctor to prescribe in any case as they are more concerned with the system, rather than patients.

Unless you know different, I believe drugs are approved for certain uses. SSRIs are not approved in Ireland for treating covid. Therefore, you are expecting a GP to prescribe an unapproved drug.

There are only two ways they can do this:

1. Enroll the patient in a clinical trial. I assume there are no such trials currently running in Ireland.
2. Prescribe for use by his individual patients on his direct personal responsibility, in order to fulfil the special needs of those patients.

Why would a GP who is not an expert in the use of SSRIs for treating covid take the risk of (2)?

Besides which, the new covid-specific treatments have greater efficacy.

It is usual for these threads to be completely mental, as evidenced by the Ivermectin one. Random unqualfiified people googling sh!t on the internet is not how medicine is practiced.

edit: I'll add that the very patients for whom covid therapies are likely to make sense (those with comorbities) are the same patients for whom drug and disease interactions are critical.

The Merck drug doesn't actually have greater efficacy against Covid. it's latest trial results are pretty much the same as what fluvoxamine achieved. you should really inform yourself in that regard.

The "Together Trial" from where the fluvoxamine findings come from is a very respected and professionally run trial and found the very same utterly useless Ivermectin that you mention to be ..... utterly useless.

Pfizer's Paxlovid does have higher efficacy than fluvoxamine.

But neither are available in Ireland right now and it's unknown when they actually will be whereas fluvoxamine is.

There is nothing illegal about prescribing a drug approved for prescription.

yes I agree with you - that is the most likely outcome.

The "Together Trial" was specifically looking at repurposed medicines and thankfully added some recent respected and credible evidence for the fact that Ivermectin is not effective (at all)

But they have uncovered statistically significant findings in favour of fluvoxamine that are as good as what Merck's Molnupiravir achieved

Both Pfizer and Merck have committed to allow generic drug companies to produce and sell Paxlovid and Molnupiravir cheaply in "poor-country" markets with the proviso that basically "rich-country" markets will pay the $500 to $700 full-price

Something cheap like Fluvoxamine could and probably should have a place in such "rich-country" markets but as you said, will most likely be (deliberately) ignored
