I love the way you just instantly blanket them as having terrible quality issues with nothing whatsoever to back it up, whereas if someone said that about Kia, you'd be having an existential crisis. Proof, if ever it was needed that you have your own biases.

Dash that had worse plastics than you would get on a child's toy for one.

Lots of other quality issues too.

It was something that VW rushed together to get out after the diesel scandal.

It's about as exciting as a bar of soap too.

That must explain the 12 month waiting list to get one.

Is there a waiting list for the new Sportage?

Or the local Tyre Man who says wing wongs are made in the same factory as Goodyear.....

The only reason there is a waiting list for them is because of the delays in semi conductors and because of VWs incompetence in making them.

The new Sportage is actually selling very well. I have seen lots of them around the last few days. A neighbour just bought one too in K3 or K4 spec. Only had a quick look. Will have a better look next time but I thought it looked great. They hold there value well too.

Isn’t the Sportage a top ten seller in Ireland? To say there’s “no demand for them” would be pushing it. A very appealing vehicle given the price and competition

Yes it is. Not long till it will be in the Top 5.

It certainly is a very appealing, very well made, classy, stylish vehicle and well equipped too.

You cant compare an ID4 to a Kia Sportage, one is a dedicated electric platform with high levels of finish, the other is a Kia.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

Appealing, classy and stylish wouldn't be words i'd be using to describe it now tbh.

If you ask my, the boys were watching too much Transformers when they came up with it.

There was very much no thought put into how thar very intense front end blends into a very dull side profile. It's like they used up all their creative energy on incorporating one design feature from every single other new SUV on the market into the front end then said **** it we just need to get it finished now and done a generic side profile and just used the blend tool on photoshop to join them up.

    Yes you can.

One has a low rent low quality dash and interior that by the way would be the VW.

The KIA on the other hand has one of the best dashs and interiors in its class.

Have you been in either of them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,688 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

The Kia looks ok and must be well priced given how it sells.

I have not had a drive of the new one but the current Tuscon is not quality so I guess that is something to go on.

Tuscon is far from cheap either. Way over priced by the time you get some spec.

Is there a good summary of the options for the Kia Sportage and the relationship and the relative value for money. Reading some things that the hybrids versions are relatively more expensive than some hybrid options

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 320 ✭✭murtyd17

Ended up getting the petrol hybrid, very happy with it so far

Very nice. What colour did you go for? I think it's a pity that Kia do not offer blue on it here as it looks well in blue.

The lunar silver looks nice do. The infra red is a nice colour too.

Saw one in Penta metal today and it looks really nice in that colour.

Picked up my HEV K3 in Penta Metal on the weekend, and I have to say I love it. Packed with high end features and very comfortable to drive. The hybrid engine has a good bit of pace when needed for overtaking too.

    Well wear. It sounds lovely.

Did you get a good deal or any extras?

How long were you waiting for it?

I rang around a lot of places and Kia Dundrum seemed to be the cheapest, they also gave me pretty decent value for my trade in. Then, I managed to secure 0% finance on the 31st of March before it ended. So all in all I was pretty happy with the deal.

I wasn't 'waiting for it' as such, around the start of March he told me he had a few coming in around April time, I went and had a think about it, rang around some other garages (some getting none, some getting a small few around the same time) and eventually decided to put a deposit down.

You done well so. You got a great car. Hope it goes well. How is the ride?

    What did you trade in?

I find it really comfortable to drive. Drove to Galway in it, smart cruise control, lane assist etc made it a breeze. Traded a Polo, so a decent step up.

That is good to hear. The Sportage always has been a comfortable car to drive in so good to hear that the new one still is.

Yes that is a decent step up alright.

We've a Sportage, and I must say, that it has been great, the only fault was that the passenger seat belt alarm would go off if the heated seat was left on, with none sitting in it (I was keeping the take-away warm)

That was fixed under warranty, other than that there was excess wind noise, but that was due to the rubber seals on the door not having been pressed in hard enough at the factory.. I reset them myself.

Other than that it's been great, boot space is a bit small, so maybe a Sorrento next, or an xtrail.

A sorrento so because there is no X-Trail at the moment unless you go second hand.

    What year is your Sportage?

    Is It the MK 4?

Absolutely torn the last week deciding between a K4 and a Cupra Formentor. Total opposite sides of the spectrum I know. One side of me wants the fun and mystery of the Cupra and the sensible side is saying the K4 and tbh I do love the tech of the display as the Cupra is buggy and very laggy.

I assume everyone here has had a great experience of the new Kia?

The main question I have is finding out info on it. Most online reviews are based on the GT line or the HEV K3.

Any tips or warnings on the K4 would be appreciated. (Very vague I know)

Must reviews I have seen of the Sportage have said the K3 is more than enough but if you like the extra kit and the spec of the K4 then go for it. The Sportage is bigger and more spacious I would say over the Cupra and will probably keep it's value better too but the Cupra is much more exclusive and maybe special.

It is really up to you about which one you go for. Have you driven them both? If not I would say do that definitely. Then you might be able to decide easier which one you want.

Yes, and to add to that it looks like all the Cupras are at least part electric. If you want the hybrid Sportage, they are only available in K3, for the time being at least. Only thing missing on K3 is keyless entry/stop/start, full leather seats and wireless charging. I couldn't really see anything else as far as I remember.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,442 ✭✭✭forzacalcio

Thanks all. Tbh this is down to driving a Duster for 6 years and finally thinking now is the time to have some fun and actually treat myself now the kids are out of baby/toddler seats the Cupra is number one. There is the issue of the possibility of number 3 arriving at some stage so the Sportage wins. Can I fit two booster style seats and a new born seat in a Cupra? Probably not. In that scenario the Sportage wins. Might be best to get the snip and throw my lot at the Cupra 🤣🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,442 ✭✭✭forzacalcio

Ive driven them both. The Cupra excited me, put butterflies in my belly but end of the day I need to look to the future too. The Sportage K4 is slick, comfy and tech/upgrades I've only ever dreamed of. I've been driving a Duster for 6 years and tbh that was a hard slog and hard to deal with but it did us well while the kids were born and in infancy, I was absolutely ridden rock solid by a dealership with the Duster so I'm glad to be moving on to bigger and better things.

Either car will be a big upgrade over the Duster. There is not really much out there over them two in this class.

A Mazda CX-5 is nice but getting on a bit and the diesels are a risk if you are looking at diesel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,442 ✭✭✭forzacalcio

This was mentioned to me this week to stay clear of diesel. It's why I was humming and hawing over a K3 and K4.

Yeah the Duster is just a 2020 Lada in reality. Well in my opinion anyway. Appreciate the feedback all. I'd imagine I'll go Cupra now and grab the Sportage in the next 3/4/5 years.

Mid life crisis and all that...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,605 ✭✭✭cpoh1

You need to be careful here, if you are talking about 3 rows of child seats at the back of the Sportage you will struggle there, its not wide enough.

What's peoples opinions on the Sportage MHEV?

Looking at a new car and like the Kia but not sure how much of a saving I'd get with the mild hybrid. Know very little about them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,860 ✭✭✭Julez

I have the HEV Sportage, I love the car, can't fault it. But even as an all out Hybrid it's not the most efficient car in the world. More efficient than standard, of course. But as Hybrids there are others out there that will offer better Miles Per Gallon. I know you asked about MHEV, I'm guessing it's not going to be a leader in that category either. In general, I think any MHEV is really more of a marketing thing with marginal enough savings over a standard engine.

Yes it most certainly is a marketing gimic. The Dad bought the last model MHEV Sportage and his diesel he had before was actually more efficient. I wish he had of asked me I would have said wait there is a new model coming. I actually has a less well equipped car over the first mk 4 he had.

No idea if he will ever change it but a Niro would be perfect for him I think. He does less driving now.

Would recommend a BYD Atto 3 to him except no dealers abd I doubt he would like the door pockets in it. Don't get me wrong I think the 3 guitar strings in the door pockets on them are cool but impractical.

Hi, what would the consensus be in terms of the K4 PHEV versus the GT Line Diesel? Putting aside the merits of a diesel vs PHEV for distance requirements, has anyone any opinions on the spec or style differences?

As with most UK models, it is a shame that the GT Line S didn't make it into the choice of models given that there is a PHEV option available.

Thanks for the input so far, interesting read.
