Picking a health insurance plan

I previously had health insurance through work with Irish Life Health. I now need to pay for it myself. I can obviously continue with the existing plan but tried to shop around to save some money. However the sheer quantity of plans is overwhelming.

Is there any good guides to picking the best plan?

Make sure that whatever plan you choose will not restart waiting period for some illnesses.

If there is less than 13 weeks break in your cover when moving, a new insurer cannot impose a waiting period.

But when you move to higher plan, certain waiting times can be imposed.

Better to check that before moving plans.

Agreed but the OP is out of plan at the moment - 'I previously had health insurance'. My point is that he/she should not allow 13 weeks to elapse or they will have a waiting period imposed for all procedures other than what might be required after an accident or injury.
