Insuring Japanese Imports - Have Companies stopped this

Father trying to insure his Honda Hybrid car that is a Japanese import

it was approx €400 last year under my mothers name. Unfortunately my mother no longer with us and dad had to get insurance under his own name, he was named driver, but does have 20+ years prior to that

He rang around a few companies and was told by some that they don't insure Japanese Imports? Is this the case as seems unfair

His cheapest quote is €700+ and some have quoted €1k but not sure if that's also due to his age 80+

Any suggestions ?

Insurers generally offer to transfer the insurance in to the name of the surviving spouse, especially if they were a named driver. Have you gone down that route?

This was done but now the insurance is due for renewal and its under my fathers name

Rang all the usual's and the cheapest he got was about €700 from Allianz. Me thinks his age is also working against him and that the fact car is Jap Import Honda Jazz Hybrid. Going to try a few more today but its just so annoying the price jump

Are you going for 3rd party of fully comp quotes? Getting quotes a while ago for my mother in her 18 year old car and there where massive differences in price for fully comp vs 3rd party, one company was over €1k more expensive for 3rd party than fully comp, she's owned the car years.

Yeah asking for both options and also adding named driver to see if any cheaper

Also getting annoyed with them on the phone as trying to pressure dad in taking option...until he handed me the phone

Still cheapest is with Allianz
