    Well is it Autumn yet?

When Does Autumn Start in Ireland

Autumn in Ireland, like most seasons on the Emerald Isle, is hard to define. Traditionally speaking, autumn lasts through September, October and November. But Ireland’s Gaelic calendar is quite different than tradition.

On the Gaelic calendar, autumn or Fómhar which loosely translates as harvest, starts in August. Called lunasa in Irish Gaelic, August 1st marks the festival of Lughnasadh, celebrating the start of the harvest. And interestingly, the months September (Meán Fómhair) and October (Deireadh Fómhair) translate as “middle of harvest” and “end of harvest.” In Gaelic calendar, November is the start of winter.

I consider August to be Summer however I consider November to be Winter.

Deja vu coming up, I was taught in school the following for the traditional seasons:

    Feb, Mar, Apr = Spring

    May, June, Jul = summer

    Aug, Sept, Oct = Autumn

    Nov, Dec, Jan = winter

And whilst the summer is in reality jun/july/Aug for the school holidays (& winter from a weather POV definitely lasts beyond January) I'll never really change from considering the traditional arrangement as I was taught all those years ago TBH. Seeing other breakdowns (astronomical) having Autumn until Christmas week is quite simply bizarre as whatever about the August debate no one I know refers to Autumn in Nov/Dec... ultimately its each to their own, but there's no definitive answer IMO.

With global warming, the seasons are becoming hard to define weather wise.

this is what I was thought in school as well and I stand by it.

I'm 30 later this year and this year and this is what I was thought also.

It's only in After Hours I encounter people who was thought the other way.

Either way, the seasons are not something I'm going to fall out with folk over 🤣
