About saunas

I work in a multinational tech company and have volunteered to prepare a wellness and engagement session about saunas for my colleagues, a sort of sauna workshop.

I was thinking of putting some slides on sauna benefits, something about sauna etiquette (towel, being naked, etc), perhaps some recommendation for places in Ireland...

Does anyone have some other ideas about sub-topics for my presentation or perhaps some good links to websites?

You could talk about people introducing oils into saunas which can be quite annoying too fellow users as well as snotting on the floor

Ah, yes, German Aufguss with essence oils on the stones! People usually love it! I have noticed in some Irish saunas it is not so welcome, not sure why... perhaps they have less stones covering the electric elements...

Genuine question, where does covid leave sauna users at the moment? Most of them are pretty small spaces. Are they open in spas at the moment? What goes on?

They have to close at 8pm and there is no capacity limitation but need proof of immunity from all patrons.

When all saunas and steam rooms were closed in Ireland, in Germany saunas were open but not the steam rooms. It seems that like other viruses, Covid does not survive in high temperatures, so saunas are quite safe if I understand correctly.

Unknown as it's airborne. I'd have my doubts that there's all that much research on saunas and steam rooms, yet. It will start emerging though.

Would you happen too know any Dublin based saunas or steam rooms ?? I used too use one at a gym and along came covid so the gym has taken them out.

I only joined the gym for sauna & steam rooms.

any ideas ??? As I’d love too get using them again.

Wow, yes, I would also love to have more ideas about Dublin based saunas and steam rooms that might allow to do the proper procedure, that is, in the nude.

I am the president/event coordinator of the Irish Naturist Association and before the pandemic we used to hire Mespil swimming pool and Ballyfermot Leisure Centre in Dublin. Both have nice saunas and steam rooms. I haven't resumed bookings with Mespil because there is a capacity limitation and Ballyfermot doesn;t seem to have available slots at the moment, not too many group bookings.

I have also enquired unsuccessfully in Monkstown Leisure Centre, Loughlingstown Leisure Centre and Newpark.

I also got one booking once at the City West Hotel (nice facilities) but they were using it now as a Covid centre, not sure when it will be free again.

Oh wow small world.

there is some lovely facilities about but with covid it seems too have messed things up big time.

castleknock hotel has great facilities but has since go too hotel guests only so has ruled that out.

it’s mainly hotel based now as a lot of gym cannot or do not want too cater for such a small number of clientele.

there is the mobile sauna (we had used it out at sandycove) which is handy but is very hit and miss with bookings.

there's always one tool who snots on the floor, and stands up doing stretches while everyone else is sitting down.

Scientific evidence around the proposed benefits of sauna is.. shaky at best. It can make people feel good and relaxed, so there's that.

If you're going to do that, make a note of people moving down to the lower levels if it gets too hot.

Any Irish saunas I've been to have had the capacity for it, but other than throwing another scoop of water onto it, no one's ever actually done it.

The general rule is nudity only, but wrap a towel around your waist or breasts (you can make this mandatory or optional depending on the sensitivities of your audeince). You'll need it to sit on, anyway.

@Princess Consuela Bananahammock If I was female, I think I’d find being covered from chest to thigh’s with a towel in a sauna pretty uncomfortable for more than a couple of minutes

And yet all the women that I share the sauna or see going into the sauna in the health club I’m a member wear a one piece, usually straight after stepping out of the pool, the lads are the same with their togs , bringing a towel in, I’d say less than 30% do that, just sit in the wet swimwear, bit of a bugbear of mine

The worst is when they get out all sweaty and just jump into the pool or hop into the hot tub / jacuzzi without showering off. That's gross.

Pool chemicals for one, maybe I’m a bit anal about it but I’ve two towels, one for after showering & a dry clean one I’d take into the sauna wrapped around my waist, I’d shower & dry after swimming before going into a sauna, wouldn’t go into a sauna in swimwear I’d been wearing in a pool, tend to avoid communal jacuzzis generally, if a lady wears a swimsuit in a sauna in Ireland, for me ideally it should be dry & clean, I could be just fecking odd though 🙂

Me too. If they had a nude sauna here the media would probably say it was a swingers club and there would be protests outside.

I suspect it’s going to take a long time for a decent number, never mind the majority of Irish to change their view that non sexual social nudity is not completely strange

we stay in hotels in the Canaries that have spas & wellness centres where the websites would say or have signs that say saunas / steam rooms / massage treatments are nude or clothing optional but they do get a lot of German, Dutch, French & Scandinavian visitors and the naturist euro is important to the local economy, some of the hotels have their own separate naturist pools & sunbathing areas, so there is a demand or they wouldn’t bother. Some have separate nude & textile saunas to I suppose keep everyone happy

I do see the odd hotel review on tripadvisor usually by a British reviewer saying , we went to the spa but we kept our swim wear on, or we popped into the spa just for a giggle but plenty of brits are happy to get their kits off too
