Watch suggestion for 18th Birthday: PVD Black Chrono ~€500

Hi all

For those with more expertise & experience than I, I need some watch suggestions.

Son #2 is 18 this week and at the last minute has decided a watch would be a suitable event marker. So lots of notice.....

So after some trying on of a few watches I have ( Tag/ Omega Seamaster / JLC) and a few knockabout watches and a bit of browsing he decided he likes this.

It's an all black PVD Tissot PR100 chrono on a black strap. 41mm. It's OK, but I suspect there are better for the same price (€500). And probably not in stock in Dublin anyhow...

Requirements

1) All black, PVD

2) realistically quartz is probably better as he will not wear it routinely

3)NATO or fabric strap ( I think the linked one is actually a steel strap)

4) Max size 41mm, preferably < 40mm

5) Some ruggedness...

I don't think 18 year olds wear watches anymore. At least not the types that don't also count how many steps you took and allow you to post memes on social media

Did he ask you to get him a watch, is it something he has been looking for, does he actually wear a watch at the moment.

If he doesn't wear watches, that will just sit in a drawer somewhere until it eventually gets lost, or you keep it at home for him until he gets older and has a drawer of his own to keep it in

Agreed to some extent. But he did ask, and I don't care if it mostly stays in a drawer. He has the fitbit stuff but only wears that half the time (not designed for the rugby pitch!). I have a few decent watches but in reality wear one less then one day a week, usually only for meeting/ social stuff. At the risk of being abused, a watch is not so much for telling the time anymore, is it??

How about one of these? Orient are a brilliant affordable brand and a great entry point to the hobby. Also doesn't break the bank so if he looses interest in a few months at least it's not 500 down the drain. These orient divers also hold value a lot better than no name brands at the same price point so he should be able to get most of what you pay back for it should he decide to change at some stage (I would probably have loved a blacked out diver at 18 but could never se myself wearing one these days!)

Also if 500 is your budget you could even get a couple of orients for that and start a bit of a collection!
