    His songs left no room for weak singing - there was no hiding places with his tunes.

    Saw him in 1982 firstly at the Birmingham NEC when I was on the 2nd or 3rd row, and a few days later at Wembley Arena when I was supposed to be on the front row. Got there to be told I'd been moved to the back due to a change in stage configuration. Alas it was the second one I took my camera to. Could still make out which one he was as he was performing Paradise by the Dashboard Light with Karla DeVito:
