Worth getting a law degree before applying to the Gards

    Hi all,

I am currently finishing a 4 year course in computing and I have really taken an interest in joining the Gards in the last while. I have considered getting a law degree but the thought of going back to college for 3/4 years just to go up the pay scale by 2 points seems like a waste of time and money.

My question is, Does having a law degree actually help you in the gards, in terms of promotions into specialist roles etc in the future. Ive asked a few different people about this and I've been sort of told that. The degree can help you when first applying, but in terms of promotions it doesn't really mean much. You are awarded promotions based off your performance and if you are fit for said promotion.

I do know of other careers where having certain levels of degrees can mean more money, is the Gards the same or is it just like what i said above. Just the skip up 2 points on the pay scale?

    Will make no difference whatsoever.

Your current course should enable you to get the increments anyway.

There is Law, and there is Criminal Law.

90% of what law students learn has nothing to do with 110% of what a member of An Garda Siochana do on a day to day basis. I'm not joking but your computer skills may actually be more useful as an applicant.
