Got to the last guess with no map, but had to map it to figure out what tiny round island was in that area.

Getting back to my query as to how the distance between countries was calculated, a few days ago the answer was Cameroon. By some fluke I guessed Nigeria, it's next door neighbour, and Worldle claimed it was 448km away. However, the distance between the two capitals, Abuja and Yaoundé, according to Google Maps is 733km.

My next guess was Gabon, it's neighbour to the south, which Worldle reported as being a whopping 914km away whereas according to Google Maps the distance between it's capital, Libreville and Yaoundé is only 445km.

Today however, the distance between my two last guesses was pretty much spot on. but they were both pretty small islands which leads me to think that the distances are actually between some definition of the centre of each country but how exactly that is defined I don't know. Does anyone have any experience of this?

I tried the Cameroon one on a separate IP - ie knowing it was Cameroon, so I could guess a few of its neighbours and compare the distances.

Equatorial Guinea - which is smaller than Nigeria - was further away from Cameroon, even though both countries border it. So that seems to rule out the central theory.

I thought it was also something to do with the direction of the arrow - maybe the longest distance of travel between the two countries in that direction. But again it doesn't seem to stack up.

So...I don't know. And knowing you've hit a bordering country would be quite useful

The source code is here: https://github.com/teuteuf/worldle

It says it uses the data set here: https://developers.google.com/public-data/docs/canonical/countries_csv

It has a list of longitude and latitude positions for each country. It seems to be completely a completely arbitrary point within a country's borders though, I can't see any pattern to it.

I looked up a Wikipedia article on the subject of geographical centres.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geographical_centre

The key point I took from it is this ...

As noted in a United States Geological Survey document, "There is no generally accepted definition of geographic center, and no completely satisfactory method for determining it."
