Super Bowl halftime show question

So I've been racking my brain trying to remember this, when did they start airing the half-time show live on tv?

I know that the broadcast rights for the Super Bowl itself have passed between Channel 5, Sky and the BBC, but I'm just wondering if anyone knows when exactly they started airing the half-time show live here. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
