Case and point unfortunately, non combatants inside a war zone with no real military training or experience believing they are doing the right thing have no put others at risk trying to locate them , going by where and when they went missing it doesn't look too good, this happened in Syria and Afghanistan and elsewhere unfortunately

No mention of the claimed you made in the last post in the article at all .

Looks like Soladar has finally fallen into Russian hands. Although there is some good news, the Ukrainian soldiers that were held up in the town surrounded by Russian forces have apparently surrendered ahead of the midnight deadline they were given to surrender.

The article from the Kiev post makes zero mention of your claims

Yes it happened frequently in Afghanistan and Syria too. I lost friend's in identical circumstances in both places. They went out on roads that they knew well, and had always returned safely. Then the situation changes, and one day they leave as usual, but don't come back. I hope that some one has them in a safe location, and are waiting for a quiet spell to get them back to safety.

Big news, and could be the thin end of the wedge that opens the gates to more, heavier equipment.

So: here's the question from the ignorant to (hopefully) some knowledgable armchair generals. realistically, what can 14 tanks do - and what functional difference would tanks make in this war in the first place?

I saw it mentioned in passing that given the Ukrainians mobile, ad-hoc style of warfare, light tanks and APCs are more useful to them than traditional heavy weaponry like tanks.

I wonder does this mean Germany has decided to allow re-export and just not announced it yet or whether Poland thinks that this will finally tip the Germans into doing so. FT is saying that the UK has also decided in favour of sending Challenger 2 tanks, which makes it sound like something coordinated is afoot.

  • Registered Users Posts: 40,291 ✭✭✭✭Gatling

Finland Said last week they would send tanks too as part of a larger coalition sending tanks, currently there is about 2600 -3000 leopard tanks in Europe,

Add to the 40 + Bradley vehicles, Marader vehicles and others on the table ,

It could become the one thing to tip the scales across Ukraine front

Best person to direct that question to is Manic Moran, although I think he mostly posts in the other thread.

I would say however it is not just 14 Leopards, it is 14 Leopards, 10 Challengers, 40 Marders, 50 bradleys, and 40(?) AMX-10. Combined with the soviet tanks Ukraine already has that would I suspect make for a very potent mobile strike force.

How does that all work from a training , usage and maintenance perspective?

If they've never used or managed these vehicles before will that not be a challenge?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,324 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

If it's like other scenarios, the tanks come with trainers and so on, with Ukrainian soldiers travelling to Poland to train.

With Musk's Tesla comp slowly going down the plug another company's top dog Khosrowshahi, chief executive officer of Uber Technologies has dug deep to keep the ambulances heading over to the Ukraine.

the ride-sharing giant raised $1.5 million to buy ambulances through United24, the official fundraising arm of the Ukraine government.

Hopefully this means that they've decided that Surovikin's tactic of attacking Ukrainian power infrastructure has been a failure and wasted missiles for no military benefit.

Aside from the documents posted on Telegram, has anyone seen or heard anything more about the two British Volunteers who went missing?

Sweden on Thursday, January 19, pledged to send its Archer artillery system, a modern mobile howitzer requested by Kyiv for months, to Ukraine along with armored vehicles and anti-tank missiles.

For those not aware Archer is one of the world's best self proppeled artillery units with a deploy, fire and go time of well under 2 minutes (see second video). Designed in Sweden it's as well made to operate in rough and wet terrain specifically designed against Russian style approach to warfare with a top speed of 90km it can as well redeploy very quickly to where it's needed for combat support.

That 2nd Video is impressive - Fires a 3 round salvo and is already on the move away from the firing location before the 1st round has impacted.

Very difficult to defend against you'd imagine.

Good god that's an astonishing rapidity between firing and being in the wind not longer after; how do you even defend against that kind of mobility? What remains of your position can't fire back 'cos the enemy is miles away. As impressive it is to see Ukraine fighting with modern equipment, it's also scary how advanced warfare has become even at the level of something that's as old as ballistic artillery. The Weapons Industry is presumably enjoying a feast of data and metrics to refine its output.

This is why the delivery of heavy tanks has always felt a little bit of a weird narrative. These artillery systems appear more in line with how Ukraine has fought this war: fast & borderline nomadic, or a kind of institutionalised guerilla approach. Heavy tanks feel like slowing down the lightning effectiveness Ukraine has been able to harass or assault the Russians.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,843 ✭✭✭Pete_Cavan

I'd say the reluctance to give Ukraine the latest artillery systems initially was due to fear that Russia would capture and later replicate them. There is less fear of Russia capturing anything unscathed now that they are no longer advancing and seem set on holding what they currently have. The risk of giving these weapons has probably reduced significantly.

The nature of the war has changed from what it was 6 months ago and the Ukrainians capability has developed a lot too, they are in a better place to operate these weapons now than they were at the beginning. The Ukrainians have learned a lot in the last 11 months. Wasn't much point giving these weapons if there was a good chance they'd be destroyed soon after. Maybe an element of the Ukrainians having earned the right to get these weapons.

The war has really shown what power the west actually possesses.

I imagine countries are also watching very closely as this is probably and hopefully the only time these weapons will be used during a war.

  • Registered Users Posts: 40,291 ✭✭✭✭Gatling

Still no confirmation on the remains of either being found or whether they are in a medical clinic somewhere ,it doesn't bode well considering Wagner forces were operating in the area at the time,

No news in this case isn't good news unfortunately

  • Registered Users Posts: 40,291 ✭✭✭✭Gatling

You have to think we've well known since desert storm how powerful the West in particular the US military truly are and they have gotten increasingly more powerful since then ,the work the swedish military is unbelievable, from land ,sea and air they have developed some of the most advanced systems anywhere and on a budget too,

It's something we actively try to follow and replicate to develop our own military defense and export capabilities

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,446 ✭✭✭jmreire

Looks bad all right. But maybe, just maybe they are still alive and being held as bargaining chips? Hopefully this is the case. The Ruzzians have form in cases like this. Would not be the first time that prisoners were taken captive, and nothing heard about them for weeks or in some cased months. Evil shower of barstewards.

Presumably, this news should please all those who had been waving around Ukraine's reputation for corruption as having some/any kind of relevance with this war. Still not sure what relevance that was, but in any case; Zelensky clearing house, I guess with one eye on Ukraine's future post-war and when the next discussion is around EU Ascension, or important rebuilding money. Investors and EU money won't come pouring in if corruption isn't seen to be fought.

A number of Ukrainian officials have been dismissed or resigned over the last four days amid corruption allegations as Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, attempts to take a zero-tolerance approach to the issue.

Fifteen senior officials have left their posts since Saturday, six of whom have had corruption allegations levelled at them by journalists and Ukraine’s anti-corruption authorities.

The wave of changes started on Saturday when Ukraine’s deputy minister of infrastructure, Vasyl Lozinskyi, was detained by anti-corruption investigators and dismissed from his post. He was accused by prosecutors of inflating the price of winter equipment, including generators, and allegedly siphoning off $400,000. Investigators also found $38,000 in cash in his office.

Reports suggesting Germany is finally relenting and will join an alliance with Poland and Scandinavian nations in supplying Ukraine with Leopard 2s. Other reports suggest France may follow suit with their own main battle tank - even scuttlebutt suggesting the US may be sending Abrams. No word AFAIK if the UK will send their Challengers.

I've still wondered what value these might have to a side fighting a fast moving campaign - but I don't envy those Russian crews, stuck in soviet era vehicles, facing down the world's most advanced tanks baring down on them.

I thought the same with regards to what they can bring to the party but I also read (twitter…) that the Russians are in talk with the taliban to buy all the equipment the Americans et al left over.

if that’s true… quite embarrassing for the Russians
