Note, none of this is from a verified source; hence the bucket of salt etc.

OMON surrender Wagner HQ in Molkino. Also reported 10. Brigade of GRU and Russian Air force in mass. Wagner's are willing to fight back .

Military vehicles are starting to move into the government district of the Moscow. Apparently they have orders to protect the State Duma.

Russian General Surovikin also known as General Armageddon or butcher of Aleppo, issues an appeal to Wagner fighters:

“We are of the same blood, we are warriors, the enemy is waiting for the internal political situation in the country to worsen, you can’t play into the hands of the enemy”...

    From Russian telegram channels:

Колонна вагнеровцев едет через кпп Новошахтинск, протяжённость колонны около 50 км. На кпп Волошино такая же ситуация, только колонна 80 км и продолжают ехать. ВП и пограничники не препятствуют.

In short 2 columns of Wagner criminals one 50km long and another 80 km long are crossing border into Russia...

    Border guards do not interfere.

    Wagner PMC Telegram channel:

    "We're starting."

    This part is verified:

Russian state TV channel interrupts news program to refute Wagner chief's claims

State news TV channel Russia 24 interrupted the broadcast of a program Friday night to read out a message from the Russian Ministry of Defense, stating the claims made by Wagner mercenary group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin "do not correspond to reality."

The interruption came during the broadcast of the International Overview program. The anchor announced the following:

"We are interrupting the program [...] to deliver a message from the Russian Ministry of Defense: All messages and videos circulating on social media, attributed to Yevgeny Prigozhin, regarding alleged attacks by the Russian Defense Ministry on Wagner PMC rear camps, do not correspond to reality and are intended to misinform."

Russian TV channels were hacked and played Prigozhin's message from earlier today:

Another statement from Prighozin on Wagner telegram channel- promising immediate capture and judgement of generals who never took supporting action, directly mentioning surovikin and his role in losing Kherson...

Confirmation of military vehicles in the central parts of Moscow:

From another twitter thread indicating this was a planned action, from twitter account ChrisO_wiki:

1/ Wagner Group fighters have been saying goodbye to their relatives over the past 24 hours and telling them to watch the TV news, which suggests that they may have had advance notice of today's dramatic events with Yevgeny Prigozhin.

2/ Verstka reports that worried relatives are saying in Wagner-related chat rooms that their loved ones have "called and said goodbye" in the last 24 hours, and told them to watch for "what [TV channel] Rossiya 24 has to say".

3/ Chat participant Elena Kigeleva says: "Yesterday many guys called and 'conditionally' said goodbye. Many said watch the news." Multiple participants say they can't reach their Wagner men.

4/ "My husband is still out of touch abruptly, always writing to give us a live stream , but today it's like this," one of them wrote. "Usually it is always a short call at 7-8 [pm], but today it is silent. I pray it's all a joke. I have no strength anymore."

5/ Relatives are worried what will happen to their men. "Our men will soon be recognised as terrorists," one user says. "So they really think someone's going to be able to reach Moscow and what? Storm the Kremlin?"

6/ "****, it's the planet of the pink ponies [i.e. nonsense]," responded another member of the chat room. Others have advised not panicking and waiting for official statements. "Watching Rossiya 24, there's silence," a user nicknamed Yelena says. /end

Other senior military in Russia have asked the forces to turn back and not follow his order; the question is now if he'll pick up more soldiers esp. as some may see it as a way to get out of the war...

The head of the Russian Volunteer Corps called #Prigozhin a patriot of Russia and said that his views on the future of Russia are close to the RVK.

And now they are turning off the internet; never a good sign...

First clash reported in Russia; once again unverified source and buckets of salt required:

If Wagner can get up a bit of momentum, they'll be very hard to stop. The Russian army soldiers who are at home minding the fort are likely their least effective, the sons of influential people who weren't to be put in harms way, and unlikely to put up much of a fight.

Putin's grip on power has always been fragile, the strongman thing is fine until someone else decides that they are stronger. Ordinary Russians may be happy enough to fall in behind somebody else if it's presented as a glorious revolution and other patrioticnonsense

Appearantly Wagner has taken over Rostov-on-Don (this is where the Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu was suppose to be).

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the chief of the private military group Wagner, accused the Russian military's chief of staff Valery Gerasimov of ordering an aerial attack “in the middle of civilian cars.”

“The Chief of the General Staff has just given the order to raise the planes and open fire on the columns that are moving among civilian vehicles and trucks,” Prigozhin said. “He doesn't care who he kills. They have been killing their civilians for a year and a half instead of fighting the enemy.”

Prigozhin praised the Russian pilots for “refusing to carry out these criminal orders."

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the chief of the private military group Wagner, said a helicopter fired at a civilian column and was downed by his forces.

Prigozhin did not give any further details. The claim is one of many accusations made by the Wagner boss.

Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin has said that Russian Guards and military police are joining the Wagner group.

In an audio recording from Prigozhin Saturday and translated by CNN, he claimed that, "Where soldiers meet us, the Russian Guards and military police, they wave their hands cheerfully."

The Wagner chief claimed in the recording that between 60 and 70 soldiers from the Russian military have joined Wagner forces.

Above qoutes are taken from CNN but as they note they can't verify the information. This is however verified and from CNN as well and does not bode well for Putin...

Voronezh governor says convoy of military equipment is moving along the highway

    From CNN's Josh Pennington

The governor of Voronezh oblast, in southwestern Russia, said that "a convoy of military equipment is moving along the M-4 Don Federal Highway."

The M-4 is a highway connecting Voronezh and Rostov-on-Don. Voronezh is directly north of the Rostov region, where Yevgeny Prigozhin said his Wagner fighters were approaching the city of Rostov.

"A convoy of military equipment is moving along the M-4 Don Federal Highway. We request all residents of Voronezh Oblast to temporarily refrain from using the M-4 Don Federal Highway and personal vehicles," said Voronezh Governor Alexander Gusev in an update.

"The situation is under control. The region's power structures are taking all the necessary measures to ensure the safety of the region's residents."

If defections from the Russian army take hold, I don't think Moscow will be able to stop it. Perception of being all powerful has kept Putin in control, if the perception changes then people will want to be on what they see as the eventual winning side. There probably isn't much appetite for fighting on Russia soil.

Putin to address the nation "soon," Kremlin says, according to state media

From CNN's Zahra Ullah and Josh Pennington

Russian President Vladimir Putin will address the nation "soon," according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, state media outlet TASS reported.

The news follows claims the Wagner mercenary group has taken military control of a Russian city.

I did hear an interesting claim that most likely Putin is not in power (i.e. Parkinson or something else) but is a figure head and what Prigozhin is looking at doing is to replace the current puppet master. Hence all comments from him that Putin does not get told the truth but that MoD is lying to him. This would be in line with other coups (see China, Thailand etc.) where you claim that the ministers are at fault and get executed to make sure you get to keep the empire intact for the take over. This vibes well with what we're seeing at the moment esp. as Putin is popular and would give Prigozhin an execuse to move into power without a full revolution so to speak.

Wagner claims it has taken control of military facilities in Voronezh

From CNN's Isaac Yee and Yulia Kesaieva

The Wagner paramilitary group claimed Saturday it had taken control of Russian military facilities in the Russian city of Voronezh.

"Military facilities in Voronezh are taken under the control of the Wagner PMC. The army switches to the side of the people," read a short statement from Wagner's Telegram channel.

And we have the first update from Solovyov (he's one of the people called out as a reference as he's the head of MoD) and that does not look like a military vehicle that he's travelling in...

It's astonishing stuff. One wonders what the end game is, but one also suspects it won't be long coming.

Wagner probably have enough experience Vs what's left in Russia "defending" it (probably all the cushy numbers for those avoiding the front lines) that they could rush Moscow... but if the generals stay with Putin, it'd end soon enough. Plus presumably Wagner only has what it marched with, or raided from the military outposts.

And of course there's the small matter of where that leaves the invasion. Are the front lines suddenly more porous, from Wagner's departure and russian morale? How does Ukraine work this to their advantage?

And here we go, Putin is giving his speech:

What I find interesting with Putin's speech (and I only got snippets that are translated) is that a lot of it can be seen as much against Wagner as it could be turned around and be used against MoD as well with a bit of twisting...

    • This is a betrayal.
    • The entire Western information and military machine is directed against us
    • This battle decides the fate of our people.
    • This is a stab in the back of our people like in 1917.
    • The answer will be harsh.
    • “What we are facing is betrayal. Everyone who deliberately embarked on the path of betrayal will suffer inevitable punishment. The armed forces received the appropriate orders,”
    • "I believe that we will save and defend what is dear and sacred to us. Together with our Motherland we will overcome all trials. I urged the military to make the only right choice - to stop participating in criminal activities,"
    • “I appeal to the Russians, the military and law enforcement agencies and to those who were pushed onto the path of armed rebellion by deceit and threats.”
    • “They're pushing us to a defeat and capitulation, a strike against Russia, our people. Our actions will be brutal... As a citizen of #Russia, I will do everything to defend the country.”

Commander Zeki of a "Storm-Z unit", part of the 71st Guards Regiment expressed his full support for Prigozhin. Storm-Z are so called penal batallions and mainly consist of convicted Russian inmates. The commander himself was sentenced to 26 years in prison.

Update 1: Geolocated videos are showing Wagner presence somewhere near the M4 highway towards Voronezh. Voronezh military locations have according to some already gone over to Wagner's side. Voronezh is about half way to Moscow from Rostov-on-Don (confirmed taken over by Wagner) as a reference. Reports of Russian jets doing strikes along the M-4 against Wagner (videos can only confirm that attacks appear to be going on but likely true).

Update 2: Russian media has confirmed that Wagner has taken all bases at Voronezh and Russian airforce have bombed an oil depot to stop Wagner from using the fuel. One attack helicopter and one airplane has as well been shot down by Wagner that were attacking their columns. Russian defence forces has as well shot a civilian car to pieces killing the male driver and wounded two passengers. Not going to post pictures but it's bullet ridden and then some; videos and pictures are circulating of it.

Update 3: President of Kazakhstan Tokayev refused to support Putin called his Kazakh colleague, but he said that Prigozhin's case was an internal matter of the Russian Federation.

Update 4: The Liberal Democratic Party (Zhirinovsky’s party, which is the 3rd largest in Russia and until now a Putin-ally) just tweeted that "Putin is a pussy" along with a picture with Putin having some very impressive breast enhancements not suitable to be posted in this forum.

Update 5: Russian civilians in Rostov have started bringing food and water to the Wagner Group soldiers stationed in their city. Bad sign for Putin.

Update 6: Incoming reports that Prigozhin was lying for 2 months about the Wagner Group’s ammunition shortages. Instead, he was stockpiling for this moment and also gathered large quantities of MANPADS and Javelins captured from the Ukrainian Army.

Update 7: OSINT-project Oryx has started calculating equipment losses in the armed conflict between the Russian Armed Forces and PMC Wagner. As of now, Russian army losses are significantly higher as Wagner shot down an Ilyushin Il-22 (Air command post style airplane), two helicopters (2x MI-8 Eletronic Warefare helicopters), one Mi-35M (Attack helicopter ala Apache), a Tiger fighting vehicle (think Humwee), and a military KamAZ (military truck). The aircraft was destroyed, and the vehicles were seized. The Wagnerians, according to Oryx, lost only one UAZ (think Landrover).

Update 8: Moscow is preparing for a siege. The city is practically isolated by police and military units. All military equipment, which until now remained in reserve and in the border regions, is being withdrawn to Moscow, Ukraine’s Intelligence reported.

Update 9: Putin’s plane has left Moscow for St. Petersburg. Whether Putin is on board is not known. In addition in Moscow they are literally digging trenches and mining bridges currently. The elite are not hopefull either appearantly; more and more private jets with no declared destination or Turkey as destination appear over Moscow. They are making a run for it.

Update 10: This is more humour than anything but as it's related to the thread topic I'll toss it in because it made me giggle and we could all use a laugh at serious times like this.

Update 11: The Kalinouski Regiment, made up of Belarusian volunteer soldiers fighting against the Russian Army in Ukraine, will make a public announcement to the Belarusian people at 5 pm today. The traditional white-red-white flag will soon return to Belarus. Free Belarus!

Update 12: The Wagner Group has announced that most of the Russian Army units in the Lipetsk region have switched sides (and Wagner is now in the region; it's 4h drive from Moscow) and joined the Wagner Group military column heading toward Moscow. In addition it is reported that Wagner forces have disarmed the guards of the Rostov correctional colonies. According to eyewitnesses, they call on prisoners to join the Wagner PMC and move with them to Moscow.

Update 13: A military column of Kadyrov’s Chechen soldiers has just arrived to the Rostov region. Looks like the battle between the Wagner Group and Kadyrov’s Chechens is about to start.

Update 14: Incoming reports of Wagner Group soldiers leaving their missions in Africa and Syria to join the military coup in Russia against Putin.

Update 15: Reports of Wagner forces have ENTERED MOSCOW OBLAST, being 2 hours away from Moscow City. Notes: Below video is UNVERIFIED (the video is showing dumper trucks left to block the motorway which has been done closer to Moscow as well), and we could not CONFIRM Wagner is in Moscow Oblast, however based on all the reports we're getting, I am confident tweeting this and stating that this is likely true. We are trying to verify this in the current space.

Update 16: The 217th Guards Parachute Regiment moved to Prigozhyn. The 217th are located in Ivanovo which is about 300km east and a bit north of Moscow and would be approximatly 2000 men strong.

Update 17: Meanwhile, helicopters are hovering over Moscow and the region. In the next few hours it is expected that Wagner and supporting troops will reach Moscow.Moscow mayor said Monday will be a non-working day “to minimize risks,” Russian state media reported. “The situation is difficult, and a counter-terrorism regime has been declared in the Russian capital.”

Update 18: There’s more and more theories pointing toward Prigozhin only being the face of a larger coup, which is supported by parts of the Army and the intelligence services. The goal is to remove Putin, withdraw from Ukraine and return to making business with the world.

Update 19: The bridge over Moscow river has been disconnected.

Update 20: Some Russian units are pulling out of Ukraine and are returning to Russia in an effort to stop the advance of the Wagner Group. The Russian Army has established an air bridge to Moscow and is flying in troops from across the country (some rumours that it may be pro Wagner troops).

Update 21: Lukashenko, in agreement with Putin, held talks with Prigozhin

Prigozhin accepted Lukashenka's proposal to stop the Wagner movement in Russia and take further steps to de-escalate tensions, Lukashenko's press service reported.

Prigozhin himself has not yet commented on the situation.

The above now seems to have been an generous interpretation and while there were discussions no deal was struck as the latest update. Prigozhin confirmed there were negotiations but denied any agreements.

Update 22: And we swing again... Prigozhin just stated that he has proved his point and that the Wagner Group will stop its advance on Moscow. He says that a deal has been struck and that he is pulling his troops back to the barracks.

Full statement by Prigozhin: "We are turning our convoys around and are leaving in the opposite direction to field camps according to plan. Wagner PMC was to be closed off. We went out on 23rd June to the 'Justice March'. In 24 hours we walked short on 200 km from Moscow. Durinf this time we haven't shed a single drop of blood of our fighters. Now a time has come when blood might be shed. Understanding all the responsibility for spilling Russian blood, we are turning our convoys around and are leaving in the opposite direction to field camps according to plan."

I can't help feel a petty sense of antagonism towards the year's worth of posters who pleaded for peace and negotiation at the expense of Ukrainian sovereignty; presumably they are cheering this coup as the now-best way to achieve a Russian exit from Ukraine?

The speed and relative lack of resistance this convoy is experiencing is instructive as to the mood and capabilities open to Putin. For Prigozhin this has to be Moscow or bust, but he'll know exactly how well the city can defend itself from him advance. Meanwhile Putin can only shore up those he believe are loyal to him in the MoD, FSB and beyond.

I will get ahead of the curve and sat a President Prigozhin will be no friend to the West either and while this might end the war in Ukraine, you'd still see a hawk and nationalist in charge.

Well it certainly shows up the nonsense of citing an academic as 'expert' as to the cause when even Prigozhin says it was nothing to do with NATO, and it was just about plunder.

How many times was that charlatan Mearsheimer  cited as an experts?

Are you still an 'expert' when you get something this big so spectacularly wrong??? Is there a peer review on that???

What an absolute spoofer, trying to sound clever while not having a clue about the reality.

    Karl Brophy on Twitter...

Have not checked on Ireland’s most notorious MEPs yet today but presume they are urging Putin to seek peace and not prolong the fighting and cause needless deaths.

Well this is about the only explanation I've seen to the conclusion of the civil war; and that explains why Lukashenko was doing the calls of negotiation.

PLOT TWIST / HOT TAKE: Prigozhin is going to Belarus..... to be Lukashenko's successor. That would make the most sense in the current situation: Lukashenko is sick, Prigo gets a promotion, Prigo doesn't his private military anymore, and explains why Lukashenko made the deal.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,324 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Well that's the end of that; what a strange 24 hours this has been. Hard to reckon this as much of a success for Putin. He looks weak, while Prigozhin just looks like a fool, albeit one who apparently forced concessions from a man who had only just declared him a traitor and someone to put down a few hours prior. I find it hard to think this will be the end of Prigozhin - or dissent among the military class.

As far as I understand there was no quantifiable change in the Ukrainian front lines, so doesn't seem like any opportunity presented themselves to exploit russian confusion?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,599 ✭✭✭CalamariFritti

Obviously the Russian government/Putin will have to deal with Prigozhin. He was a bit of a loose cannon already but surely his position is untenable now and he can't ever be relied upon again.

The whole thing certainly does not project a position of strength.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 9,703 Mod ✭✭✭✭Manach

From my historian's perspective, the revolt (albeit) short lived has echoes from the Thirty years war where an overstretch power outsourced much of the fighting to mercenaries: i.e. Wallenstein's companies. It did not end well for the parties concerned then and it will end the same here if precedent holds.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,883 ✭✭✭fly_agaric

IMO Putin cannot just "deal" with him. He doesn't appear to have the power to, on evidence of events of last day or so and also the lead up where Prigozhin's public criticisms were getting louder and more pointed at the regime, but there was no response to it.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,324 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Putin has, effectively, rolled over and shown his tummy. That's not to say his decision to glass the sections of Russia Prigozhin had occupied would have been the right move - but the complete lack of ... aggressive response was quite stark and hard to ignore now. Putin let a man and his private army walk away from a mutiny that threatened to simply drive up to the Kremlin unapposed. That's astonishing.from a supposed hard man ruling a country with near authoritarian control, or so we're lead to believe.

We all suspected the predominance of Russia's military might was concentrated in Ukraine (and being strangled too, thanks to what turned out to be a vastly inept command and logistics infrastructure), but seeing that reality writ large as Wagner drove northwards only highlighted Putin's weakness with each KM taken, and each helicopter downed. Where does Vlad go from here? Morale across the Russian frontline, assuming social media leaks through the firewalls, must be lower than ever with Dear Leader's words proven empty, while surely those with most to gain in Moscow are assessing the usefulness of Putin's rule.

Impossible for us just following the news (and maybe for anyone) to know what is going on here. It would make your head spin really.

Could be a lot of reasons (beyond just weakness) why there was not a larger response to it from Russian military.

I think the only fairly likely conclusion is Putin is weaker than thought and the Ukraine war (failure of the invasion/"special operation" + descent into quagmire, and the empowerment of a character like Prigozhin) has made Russia politically unstable.

I am more confident that if Ukraine could deliver a serious military setback to Russia, it might well crack the regime apart and see Putin removed (by someone or a group of someones).

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,872 ✭✭✭amacca

I think you are right about Putin being even weaker than previously thought Imo Putin rules/ruled because he has a a load of sub putins with their own fiefdoms around him that could be depended upon to work in theirs and thus everyone's bests interests because those interests aligned making them no better than a crime gang (just on a larger scale than most)...that and fear due to a demonstrated capacity for revenge by any means...well the more public and gruesome the better kept the show on the road.

That would have been fine but Putin left his lane and now his slightly mad interest in empire building given the times we live in and his actual resources/power does not align with his crime bosses interests (and haven't done since the disastrous recent decision to invade Ukraine ....amazingly he would have gotten away with Crimea)

The reason there wasn't an immediate response is because everyone wasn't singing off the same hymn sheet imo....I reckon you witnessed the various groups/factions dither yesterday before deciding which side to come down on....no one likes backing the losing horse and they either weren't certain immediately that Putin was the clear winner or would have liked if he wasnt.....I'd wager they are only waiting for the time when they decide who the new King/Crime boss (or potentially more of a figurehead) will be and what they will get to retain of their empires and which bits of their competitors empires they can carve up for themselves in the inevitable reshuffle when the old king is dead or in exile.....the main reason Putin may still be in office is they don't trust each other/they haven't made a deal yet and no doubt the mistrust levels are sky high given the way Putin probably runs things and what's at stake for each of them.

Maybe one tried home run and got Prigohzin involved then left him high and dry or maybe Prigohzin was deliberately set up as he was seen as a potential threat down the line and that was the best way to neuter him in advance of the big carve up.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,843 ✭✭✭Pete_Cavan

I suspect that the reason Putin is still in place is because everybody with ambitions of succeeding him know his days are numbered. Natural causes will likely take him out so no need for a civil war or Russians fighting Russians.

I'm sure there is a lot of jostling for position going on behind the scenes. Prigohzin is the kind of guy who likes to do his jostling in public and this was a show of his strength. The military choosing between him and Putin was a dry run for choosing between him and someone else in the not too distant future.

  • Registered Users Posts: 923 ✭✭✭ilkhanid

Thanks for that. I was trawling my memory for examples where mercenary usage went awry and I'd forgotten Wallenstein.

    Machiavelli on mercenaries.

''I wish to demonstrate further the infelicity of these arms. The mercenary captains are either capable men or they are not; if they are, you cannot trust them, because they always aspire to their own greatness, either by oppressing you, who are their master, or others contrary to your intentions; but if the captain is not skilful, you are ruined in the usual way.''

There's also the Mamalukes and their masters the Ayyubids and the Abbasids and their Turkish mercenaries.

And remember this is just the tip of the iceberg that the UN was about to document.

People following the thread for some time will remember the denials on this thread of Russian executions and sexual abuse of civilians.

Russia has summarily executed 77 civilians being held in arbitrary detention during its war in Ukraine, according to a United Nations report released this morning. Since Russia began its invasion in February last year, the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine has documented 864 individual cases of arbitrary detention by Russia, many of which also amounted to enforced disappearances...

"Russian armed forces, law enforcement and penitentiary authorities engaged in widespread torture and ill-treatment of civilian detainees," said Ms Bogner. Most of those we interviewed said they had been tortured and ill-treated, and in some cases subjected to sexual violence," which included rape. Torture was used to force victims to confess to helping Ukrainian armed forces, compel them to cooperate with the occupying authorities, or intimidate those with pro-Ukrainian views."

Just arrived in this thread. Is it broke or something: a major war in Europe which has the capacity to spillover into a full blown war between Russia and the West (a.k.a. The United States) and nothing posted since the 27/6

Anyway. My question is where do folk see the endgame going? Not that I think Putin is a saint but it would seem that Ukraine is pretty spent. What happens now?

    • Russian offensive
    • Western boots on ground (Poland?)
    • Nukes?

Current affairs forum Russia thread has taken over the discussion.

Though hard disagree on Ukraine being spent. Russia seems in more dire trouble.
