It seems a bit high handed to issue 'Final warnings' two weeks after the census took place.  Shouldn't they at least wait until the middle of May before they start that?  The onus is on the householder to return their form by post if it hasn't been collected by 6th May.  So what's the point of these 'Final warnings'? - it seems like scare tactics to me.

Wont all be so lovey dovey when you get a 40,000 fine 😅

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Its to try and get the forms back and make the enumerators jobs easier.

I think I read that they bring a few token prosecutions after each census for people who wilfully refuse to return the form. But, the majority will get away with it.

Enumerators get paid per completed form, it is not heavy handed at all. If people are sending their form in bypassing the enumerator then they will not be paid for that form so this would be high handed for the enumerator; it is a temporary position on a fixed term basis, and I am told the pay would be about as bad as the quality of the data gathered 6 weeks after April 3rd. A lot can happen in 6 weeks newborns and deaths in particular. A Census' main goal is to count people - so doing this on the one night of the year assures an accuracy in the count.

Time capsule thing was about 100 years too late considering we live in a digital world.

The issues that people get indignant over never cease to amaze me. Why would anyone object to filling in a census form?

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,553 ✭✭✭Quantum Erasure

yeah but where will digital be 100 years from now?

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,239 ✭✭✭Pussyhands

Same place the capsule will be. The documents are not being stored physically, they're being scanned into storage.

If you want to tell your descendents something, just put stuff on a USB stick, put it in a box and hand it down through the generations.

I was thinking a good idea could be to put co-ordinates of something you buried. Could be cool to find something that was buried for 100 years that could be valuable in 100 years.

Data not kept save. The Government of Ireland has capped the fine that Government Agencies can get for breaching GDPR. Initially there were to be no fines for Irish government agencies.

I know of a case in the recent past where the enumerator got someone else to collect the forms for her. The CSO didn't want to hear the complaints. I told the person they should make a complaint to the Ombudsman, but they didn't.

And just before this Census Joe Duffy advertised that a spouse of an enumerator was going to appear on his program to talk about the Census so nosey family members already involved before forms completed and collected. She didn't appear. Did the CSO contact RTE?

"If you want to tell your descendents something, just put stuff on a USB stick, put it in a box and hand it down through the generations." - will USB sticks be accessible indefinitely into the future?

Leaving them a USB would be about as much use as someone leaving you a 5.25 floppy disk.

Also, surely it's the context of the time capsule? Handing something down through the generations means it'll only ever be accessible to a small number of people, the whole point of this is that it's being collated as part of the census.

People get hooked on mad conspiracies. Its like a drug for some people.

Who knows what means of storage there will be in 100 years or how it will be accessed. But suffice to say the CSO will most likely have the interface and equipment available to handle the transfer of the records, much like they did with digitising the archive of previous census's. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/

Yes, it is high-handed.  Plenty of people could go on holidays the day after the census or have to travel for some reason.  They shouldn't have to deal with 'Final warnings' and threats on their return. Also, people have the right to return the form by post if they wish.

  • Registered Users Posts: 41,072 ✭✭✭✭Annasopra

The census have the right to organise collection the way they see fit 😐

So you're saying taking data from a USB will be impossible in 100 years? Not a chance in hell.

    ^^

know nothing about tech, but that seems a fair assessment 🤣

Several things spring to mind - the longevity of the USB key itself. I doubt I have anything on USB key here which is older than a few years and recently threw a couple out because they'd failed. 100 years sounds like a very long stretch. Also, of course in 100 years it will be technically possible to read a usb key, in the way it's technically possible today to listen to a wax cylinder recorded a century ago. But it I gave you a wax cylinder, you'd have a damn hard time getting to listen to it.

I live in an apartment block. I got my census form no problem. I saw last week a notice in the lobby stating all completed forms are to be left in the security hut for collection. This weekend was another sign to leave them with security for final collection. I'm not leaving my census form with security. I won't be posting it either. She should come back to each apartment and try and make contact. They are getting paid enough. It's a matter of privacy as well.

Could you take data off a 5.25" floppy drive today?

  • Registered Users Posts: 33,647 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

  • Registered Users Posts: 29,109 ✭✭✭✭AndrewJRenko

Great, will you still be able to read it in 60 years time? How many of your peers do you reckon can read a 5 25 floppy?

Do you reckon that a USB drive will be readable in 100 years time?

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,553 ✭✭✭Quantum Erasure

Maybe stick a laptop and charger / power cable into the time capsule as well, ... I'd probably leave the battery out though, just in case

The reality that something simply becomes inaccessible by the sheer effort to obtain the technology to read it. I would imagine USB in any form would be many decades outside of mainstream usage in a century.

Plus as others have pointed out that everything from USB Sticks to floppy disks can end up unreadable in a few years. The average technology to store for even fifty years is specialised.

Meanwhile the census office are following best practices to maintain this data...

Do you think Windows updates and all the other infrastructure that keeps your laptop going will be there in 100 years time?

  • Registered Users Posts: 69,016 ✭✭✭✭L1011

An offline laptop needs no other infrastructure.

However, I would not expect batteries and capacitors to not leak over that time period.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,239 ✭✭✭Pussyhands

I guess the difference between floppy disks and USBs is that USBs are used for connection, not just accessing storage.
