GTX 1550 Ti vs GTX 1660?

I have a budget PC I built during pandemic. Sees mainly home use, light home school during lockdown, basic browsing and document work.

I upgraded my GoPro Hero3 to a Hero10 and wanted to try my hand at editing video and starting to learn basic 3d modelling.

Spec Currently;

AMD Ryzen 3 3200g APU

MSI B450M Mortar Max Mobo

8GB Hyper X Fury 3200Mhz RAM

Samsung 980 M.2 NVMe 500GB Boot Drive

ZTC 128GB NVMe M.2 (was original boot drive I used, now installed in 2nd M.2 slot)

Crucial BX500 500GB Sata SSD

Seagate Barracuda 500GB HDD Storage

ATV 500W PSU

I have a 16GB (2x8GB) Hyper X Fury 3200 kit on the way already. Weighing up options, using various pc build websites, I'll get a better performance boost getting a GPU over upgrading to a Ryzen 5 APU.

So the 1050 Ti and 1660 are the same price now (within €4) can anyone vouch for one over the other? The 1050 ti I found is MSI branded, the 1660 is Palit.

A quick look at a few benchmark sites tells me the 1660 is superior, by a good ways. I have this card myself, I'm not a huge gamer but I do like to dabble, not found a game it can't run max [1080p at least] yet. I also do a lot of photo editing, coupled with 16GB off 3200 RAM I've not had any issues running Lightroom [can be as demanding as many games] and photoshop side by side.

Thanks for the input, great to hear from someone with similar spec hardware and what sounds like similar use case.

I will upgrade the cpu in due course to a non-integrated graphics chip with better spec. The 3200g is 4 core 4 thread. Handles very well but one of the 6 or 8 core multithread Ryzens is my next step after gpu!

Just logged into website to pull trigger and realised a massive error on my part, it's actually a 1650! Poo 💩 back to hwbench :)

Edit: still far better than the 1050 ti ha!

Take a look at the newly-released RTX 3050 desktop card also maybe but stock will be an issue.

What is your budget for the card? As Glasso said, the 3050 is out there now. I've found it in places in stock for around €400.

I'm an idiot and actually scrolled down an extra page or 2 and saw the 3050!

I know I'll be cpu bottlenecked for a bit but shouldn't affect me too much.

Maybe I'll hold off an extra month and stump up for that instead...

Better off with Tom's Hardware - GPU Bench Hierarchy or TechPowerUp - GPU Database since they're based off professional reviews.

Cheers for the head's up, I did check a few but just happened to post that one. I don't tend to check these things very often, unless I'm buying new hardware. At some point though I might like to upgrade the 1660, I'd have to be gaming a lot more than I do atm to warrant it though - but I do now have a new monitor so can do 1440p gaming

I have a Samsung 32" TV as the monitor which was out of desperation at the time, but it does 1080p so it is currently not the limiting factor anyway. It has the ps4 connected too, so playing with the kids works out well.

My plan now is gpu, then cpu then monitor.

I couldn't justify the cost of a 4k monitor right now, it would be nice for the video editing and 3d modelling aspect though.

I switched up from a 1080p 22" to a 27" 1440p curved monitor and it's made a massive difference, not because of the size or even that it's curved, but the resolotion bump for gaming and photo editing has definitely made an impact. I enjoy editing in particular so much more now [if I could get my lazy @ss out to shoot more often!] I wouldn't bother with a 4K, my PC isn't the highest spec and I feel it would struggle a lot, especially on the editing side - I don't do much video but have dabbled here and there, my Fuji X-H1 is capable of shooting 4K video

I upgraded my gopro for mountain biking from an 8 year old Hero3+ to a Hero10. The Hero3 is grand on my motorbike helmet as a "dashcam" but couldn't hack the mtb. But the Hero10 does 1080, 2.7, 4 and 5.3k. It does h.264 and hevc video. File sizes are massive!

My 3200g can load it up into davinci resolve and videoproc vlogger but it does seriously struggle while scrubbing through.

I must look at 1440 monitors, I never considered them before. Would probably work really well with the ps4 too......
