Irish people are more Oats based. Maybe the famine wouldn't have happened if we stuck to our roots.

There was plenty of food produced on the island during An Gorta Mor, including oats. It wasn't owned by the people doing the work though. They were generally only allowed a small plot of land to grow food for themselves and potatoes were the only crop that would return enough to sustain them.

Do people not learn that kind of stuff now in primary school even?

Latin is the mother language of what became Vulgar Latin and ultimately the languages Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian, etc.

Greek is a separate language family.

Irish is part of the Goidelic and Gaelic language family.

Irish and Greek are as different as Finnish and Chinese.
