JSB to Illness Benefit

    Hi All ,

Asking for a neighbour (doesn't do computers) 😁

    The Situation,

She is on PUP and has just been informed by the department by letter, she has sufficient contributions to qualify for JSB and they will move her over to this payment, automatically from end of March as PUP being wound down.

She has been unwell since January and unsure what to do, she is waiting results (Tests) , she's concerned what will be required of her re seeking employment. As this is all happening automatically re transition off PUP to JSB ,can, if required , she apply for illness benefit whilst being on JSB , it's too early to know if her illness will be long term , so I don't think DA would be applicable initially. I believe a person can apply for DA whilst on JSB and keep the payment , pending a decision but what is the situation re applying for IB whilst on JSB.

Her concern primarily and if GP certifies, can she apply for IB whilst on JSB how do the department process these scenarios. She has many years of contributions.

Hope I've explained the query clearly 😏 it's an usual one .

    Thank you .

If her GP certifies her and she has the required contributions going from JSB to IB is not an issue.

If she were on benefit so long that she didn't meet the required paid contributions rules that is usually the only issue but would generally apply to a long term JSA situation, for example.

She could ring IB helpline and ask about process and timing. Explain that she may need an as yet unconfirmed amount of time for medical treatment and concerned about a gap in payment.

As both PUP and JSB require the claimant to be seeking / available for work she should look to move if she is not in a position to do so.

Your a star as always 😏 it was just the timing and she panicked when she got the letter re PUP ending , obviously I don't know the nature of illness but she has appointments in late March after the PUP transition so was concerned if on the JSB would she then be able to move to IB if required if that makes sense.

Thanks so much, I tried searching for her , there's info on JSB to DA but none for JSB to IB but as you say, probably not a common thing 😏

I found the help line for IB really lovely. I had a guy making sure I understood how to maximize my benefit - maybe I've been lucky in my dealings but they were totally open to my I will need to take time off questions.
