Finding missing grand uncles and aunts?

    My grandparents were Francis and Ellen (nee Farrell) Burke, who married in 1870. The only two children on record were my grandfather Martin Burke, born in 1889/90, and Francis Burke born in, I think, 1886. Family lore says that Martin Burke had lots of brothers who went to Australia, and who no one ever met again. But when I go back to the records on irishgenealogy.ie, I cannot locate any other children born to Francis and Ellen Burke, Tuam, before 1886 and 1889, yet they were married in 1870, so I'm sure there must have been several more children. Is there another way to locate possible other children of Francis and Ellen Burke, Tuam, Galway, married 1870. Francis was born in 1845.

    Searching the records at Irish Genealogy there are 897 Burke's born in Tuam between 1870 and 1900 so there's plenty of scope for more children born to them.

    Searching the NLI collection of RC baptisms at Find My Past I found another two children born to them - Edward in 1870 and Mary Anne in 1873.

    Searching the Select Births and Baptisms 1620-1911 at Family Search, as well as Edward and Mary Anne, there are also records for Bridget b. 1875, Michael b. 1876, Rose b. 1878 and Sarah b. 1879.

    Great work Hermy.

    Were your grandparents still alive in 1911? If so, the fertility questions should be give an indicator of how many children they had.

    Rootsireland returns 9 children between 1870 and 1890 - all the same as Hermy found plus:

    Patrick Joseph 1881

    John Martin 1890

    PinkyPinky and Hermy - that's astonishing! I'll have to refine my research abilities. I was only using irishgenealogy.ie and FamilySearch. Is it the same family though? In the 1901 Census there was only Martin and Francis Burke, age 9 and 14, in High Street, Tuam. I presumed the other children had left or emigrated.

    Yes, I think all the baptisms had High St as the address.

    @pinkypinky

    Francis died in 1892 and Ellen in 1905 so the 1911 census is a non-runner.

    Thanks Hermy. My son is doing family research on Ancestry, and I'm doing it on MyHeritage. So when I put in the details on MyHeritage, a relative - 2nd cousin, who I was not aware of, had all the details of the births and some of the deaths of their children in their family three. There is one who may have died - Gareth - an unusual Irish name, I think was named in another family tree as a child of Ellen and Francis. It was amazing the discoveries that I made - I put in my paternal Grandfather and Grandmother, who I had never met, and another family tree, had a photo of my father's marriage to his first wife (who died) and my paternal grandmother and grandfather were in the photos.
