Possible to get job in SQL without degree?

Hi guys, not sure if this is the right place to post this but thought I'd give it a shot.

Like many people covid has made me rethink things and being looking at reskilling.

Is SQL something I could learn online and get a job out of without a degree?

No. SQL is a query language that anyone can pick up in a couple of days. You'd need to bring a lot more to the table in terms of general software engineering or devops, before anyone would consider you for a job, particularly as you don't have a degree.

Not quite sure about learning it online and expecting to pick up the language in a few days is extremely optimistic. It takes approximately five years of continual use before you can "think" in a language like SQL. If you want to see what it is like, Phil Greenspun's intro from a few years ago might be worth reading.

There are also other elements that might make it a more complex question than it may appear as there are different kinds of db management software (MySQL/Mariadb/Postgres/Oracle/Microsoft SQL Server etc) that may require extra knowledge and some database software have their own scripting langages to enable frequently used queries to be programmed as functions or procedures. When it comes to designing databases (database architecture), things get a lot more complex when it moves beyond the toy databases you see with small websites and things like scalability, numbers of simultaneous users and query times become more important.

The lack of people for data positions or with data skills in Ireland is chronic at the moment, so it would be to possible to get a job that uses SQL without a degree, but it would also depend on what other skills you have, as Jim2007 says. Companies are being more flexible with requirements, whereas before you may have needed a degree and/or X years of experience, the degree part has been dropped and junior positions are being filled with people who have certs/diplomas or very basic experience. I have also seen SQL becoming a requirement or a benefit for some general non-technical positions in finance, like accountants, risk or even marketing, so if yo are coming from that background, having SQL may open up new doors that way...

Springboard courses may be an option they are usually 1 year so not too bad.

A friend done one and got some office job after working in a different area completely before.

Maybe check and see if any springboard it courses are in your area.
