I see the lovely cuddly left attacked and assaulted national party members with weapons today at their Ard Fheis. What scamps.

Kwasi Kwarteng/Liz Truss's emergency budget from some weeks back reportedly cost the UK upwards of 50B pounds only for it to be rolled back immediately by Jeremy Hunt who today warned that everyone is facing increased taxes to pay for the ludicrous actions.

And this is what is on Jacobs Rees Mogg's mind.

In the article he takes aim at the coming threat to the Tories opportunity to stay in power with the conversation around Proportional Representation growing in volume.

He is looking to maintain the scenario where they, with a minority of popularity in the country get to hold most of the power. Remember when he and others like he claimed that they needed to leave the EU so that 'the chosen elites' were not impacting on peoples lives in the UK who didn't vote for them. That is literally what he is calling for.

And coupled with the arrest of journalists covering recent Just Stop Oil protests by police using new powers granted to them in the recent policing bill which specifically looks to curb public protests, people should be paying very close attention to what this right wing mindset is attempting to do.

The problem with electoral reform in UK is a small bunch of elites on both sides of the fence. The Guardian no less

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/sep/30/labour-resisting-members-electoral-reform-pr

"The disgraceful reason why a minority in the party, comprising tribal dinosaurs, reject it, however, is that it means Labour, too, would never win alone again, losing seats to the Greens and any new socialist party that may emerge."

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,632 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

Yeah, Labour continue to have a battle between many at the parliamentary/party management level and a large number of their base. Jeremy Corbyn found out just how divided these groups are in certain ways, so too did Femi Oluwole when the party actively refused him the opportunity to become a member. Not a good sign for them in my view. Although, this being said, the fact that they adopted proportional representation at Conference is significant and a step in the right direction.

Keir Starmers recent response to Just Stop Oil protestors wasn't very different from that of Tories either and history won't judge him kindly for it.

I was in the UK over the last few weeks. A lot of ordinary people getting pissed off very quickly with the just oil mob who seem to be a mix of middle class 20 year olds and recently retired public sector workers with time on their hands. Stopping ordinary folk from going about their daily travel and work was never going to be popular.

Starmer needs that core vote as well as remaining attractive to the centre. No surprise with his stance.

Do you think scenes like this make it easy for people to go about their daily travel and work?

    All these are from 2022.

We've tried ignoring the problem, do you think we just haven't tried ignoring it hard enough?

I've lived in the UK for nearly 12 years. Nobody I know has even mentioned it. It's largely the usual angry men online who are wailing about it.

She and hundreds of others ignored lots of similar orders to get to that point without getting shot. You do realise that this is how most police victims, get shot in the US?

Stupid mobile app doesn't allow me to quote but referring to why Trump supporters can't be referred to as a group anymore than Biden or Obama supporters is because people have all sorts of reasons for supporting Trump. Maybe Biden closed the coal mine in Pennsylvania employing their town. Maybe they are pro life. Maybe they like his jokes. Who the hell knows. Statistically some of them voted for Obama previously.

I think you are referring to the hardcore MAGA rally attending election denying Trump supporters. In that case they are a group but a small minority going on the disastrous midterms for the Republicans despite the worst Democratic white house, gas prices and economy in living memory.

You are seriously not in a position to talk about snide comments:

Many people have complained about Just Stop Oil. Your anecdote is meaningless.

Let's instead take a look at some, you know, evidence - from The Guardian, no less.

As the campaign continues, polling by YouGov has found that almost two-thirds of Britons say they are opposed to Just Stop Oil’s disruptive tactics. According to a survey of 1,700 adults between 20 and 21 October – while the group’s protests were focused on central London – 64% said they opposed the tactics, which included roadblocks and spraying paint on buildings, while just one in five (21%) said they backed them.

    You're talking nonsense.

Calling it a "women's speaking event" is so disingeous it's like seeing brownshirts goosestepping in the streets and calling it a marching parade. And if that comparison seems unfair to you consider that the organiser of this event, Posie Parker, is constantly promoting and supporting European white nationalists and US "Proud Boy" fascists.

Calling what Reduxx do a "different viewpoint" is a bit rich too, their ouput is entirely trans hate propaganda. They are like Stormfront but instead of racial hatred its against trans and GNC people. Death threats are unequivocally wrong but the people who run Reduxx are hateful dickheads who know what they're doing.

Rupert Murdoch has apparently told Trump that his network will no longer support him and his days in the White House are done.

This doesn't come as a surprise, and it remains to be seen exactly how it will playout, but its worth mentioning here in the context of the absolute power that Murdoch has, and continues to have in influencing the outcomes of many political battles.

Brexit would not have happened if he was in favour of it, neither would Trump have been elected the first time round IMO. And coincidentally, another strong influence in the occurrence of Brexit, Dominic Cummings, suggested last night that the Guardian should be blocked online because it is a source of lies. The Guardian of course being one of the platforms on which Carole Cadwalladr disclosed a lot of the shady goings on behind those pushing Brexit.

And of course the irony is that one of the strongest arguments Cummings and Murdoch media made in supporting Brexit was so as to prevent Britain being influenced by unelected elites....

28 seconds of hard facts here.

A long way from 350M/week for the NHS and nothing but sunlit uplands. And it also was announced today that the Paris Stock Exchange is now, for the first time ever greater than the London one. Not to mention the cutting off at the knees the opportunity for tens of millions of UK people to travel, live and work throughout the UK, by many people who have taken steps to make sure that they retain that freedom.

Scottish parliament rejected barring rapists from obtaining a GRC.

Women's safety and boundaries are of secondary concerns to what a man wants. So very progressive.

It may have been a committee rather than a full parliamentary vote.

    https://www.parliament.scot/-/media/files/legislation/bills/s6-bills/gender-recognition-reform-scotland-bill/stage-2/marshalled-list.pdf

Amendments put forward by Russell Findlay.

It was voted against. Conservative and Labour voted for. SNP and Greens voted against.

The UK has fallen into a recession which will last more than a year and push half a million people out of work, according to a fresh forecast from the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR).

There will be the biggest fall in living standards since records began with inflation “tipping the economy into a recession lasting just over a year”, the spending watchdog said.

The drop in household spending power will be so acute in the next two years it will effectively wipe out the past eight years of growth, as wage rises fail to keep pace with inflation and interest rates rises. It will effectively turn the clock back to 2013, the OBR said.

For people born from around 1990, and who were leaving school, going to University etc from around 2008, while they might have hoped for prosperity and opportunity instead they have had to experience a global financial collapse, a xenophobic and racially driven Brexit vote, a completely inept Brexit implementation, a two-fingered approach to managing the Covid pandemic, continued climate inaction and now this. Very upsetting to have had this experience but Incredibly incredibly depressing when all along Rupert Murdoch, Conrad Black, Paul Dacre etc blatantly lied to people about what they were experiencing, and who was responsible for it. And within the last couple of years, 2 TV stations were launched in the UK with a specific focus of 'straight talking' and being non-woke, and who spend their time diverting attention in the same. This is what the right wing led Tory Government has done to the country. This is the reality, not the faux BS that the Daily Mail, Sun and Express media have been telling people they need to get worked up about.

Sure. Antifa and black panthers are just "activists" and they were coming from annual paintball picnic hence the guns on the pictures.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,075 ✭✭✭patnor1011

    Yup.

Facts - there is climate change.

Evidence - oh look flooded car and forest fire.

Solution - Just stop oil (apart from superglue as that is important activist tool)

    Simple things for simple minds...

Well that, and the thousands of scientists who have produced mountains of data to link these topics.

Let's not pretend that that doesn't exist.
