Half coconut shells on bird stand?

Hi, I was given a bird stand which had 2 coconut half-shells attached, like in the picture with a string to a hole in the middle. Any ideas what they might be used for, please?

Melt down some fat, add seed and nuts. Fill the shell and let it harden.

You can buy half coconut shells filled with a fat and cereal mix similar to those fat balls also available. The shells are just left over from these.

Great!!!! I am really delighted to know. Thanks. More for next winter but I do have a container of goose fat I never use, would that be ok?

I think on its own it would not be hard enough on anything approaching a warm day. Maybe mix it with some hard fat like suet, ideally suet on its own would be best.

Too soft, I would have thought. I use lard or cookeen.
