Is it possible to send a PM to someone with a private profile? Apologies if this is answered somewhere, have had a look and can't find anything.

Yes you can.
MOBILE
Tap on the envelope icon on the top right hand side, then tap in the 'new message' icon (circled in the image below). Then add the username in the 'Recipients' field.

DESKTOP
Itis much the same, click on the envelope icon on the top right hand side and then click on the 'new message' icon (in red in image below). Then type in the username in the 'Recipients' field.
