Hunting / Vermin control

Couple of questions on the above

Im thinking about getting a ww1/ww2 era bolt action rifle. Main reason is target shooting.

On the FAC1 section 4.2 reason for firearm the choice is hunting, target, vermin. I will not be using it for deer hunting.

I have only ever shot rabbits with a .22

    Probably a stupid question

What is the difference between hunting and vermin control, i.e what animals fall into each catagory.

Do you need land permission for both

Rabbits and foxes are vermin, so put it down, just in case. If you're planning on something big, and expensive to feed, then rabbits aren't likely, but foxes.....yeah

bmmb88 - What is the difference between hunting and vermin control, i.e what animals fall into each catagory.

Hunting is anything that has a season and is protected under the wildlife act. Vermin is everything else. Section 63(5) of the wildlife act:

    (3) Each of the following shall be vermin for the purposes of this section—

    (a) any wild bird which is not a protected wild bird within the meaning of the Wildlife Act, 1976,

    (b) any wild animal (other than a bird) which is not a protected wild animal within the meaning of that Act.”

Yes. Its not about the type of hunting but that you hunt on land that requires the permission.

    Not quite.

Hunting is anything that is protected. They fall into two categories:

    • Fully protected - cannot be hunted, ever.
    • Protected - Have a season and can only be hunted during this time or under derogation/exemption.

So fully protcted would include Pine Marten, Seals, Kerry Reds, etc. Protected with season include those that need licenses such as Deer but also includes Pheasant, Duck, Hares, various birds, etc. Most of which are covered under general license. Granted some/most may not be suitable due to you using a rifle but the FCA1 is not detailed enough to allow for this.

If you want to be sure then tick all three. If you have membership to a range then you are covered for target shooting aspect and hunting/vermin can both be covered under the same permissions and reasons. There is no need to give separate permissions for each.
