Receiving telemetry from a drone in real time

Does anyone know, is it possible to get GPS coordinates from your drone as it flies? so for example does it ping every so often with GPS co-ords and if so, could I somehow extract them in real time?

You will need some advanced flight controller in order to do this, or even to build your own.
