The GIGA Factory in Berlin does not have the best safety record to say it nicely. Seems he likes to cut some corners

Serious industrial accidents and environmental disasters in the Tesla factory

There have been several serious accidents at work at the Tesla factory since the construction phase. The Federal Minister of Labor is concerned, but the Brandenburg state government sees nothing unusual.

Seven serious industrial accidents have occurred at the US electric car manufacturer Tesla's factory in Grünheide near Berlin since 2021 . In three cases Tesla employees were affected, in four cases employees of construction or assembly companies on the large construction site, the Brandenburg Ministry of Social Affairs announced on Thursday. The ministry did not classify the numbers as unusual.

The “Stern” reported on a striking number of work accidents. Tesla reported 190 reportable accidents between June and November 2022 - that would be practically every day. The car manufacturer referred to close controls by the authorities. Since opening in March 2022, Tesla has also reported 26 environmental accidents.

Labor Minister Heil is, in his own words, “deeply concerned”

Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil ( SPD ) was concerned. “In Germany, occupational safety also protects lives in case of doubt and that is why I am deeply concerned about the news that has come to the public about a large company,” Heil told RTL and n-tv. He expects consistent country controls. The left-wing parliamentary group leader Dietmar Bartsch demanded in the “Stern”: “If the conditions cannot be improved quickly, a debate should ultimately be held about revoking the operating license.”

Brandenburg's Ministry of Social Affairs does not consider the number of serious accidents to be unusual when comparing occupational health and safety controls. "Especially given the size of the company - the largest industrial location in Brandenburg - this is a normal occurrence for us," said ministry spokesman Gabriel Hesse to the German Press Agency. “We have no indication that an excessive number of occupational health and safety violations are occurring here.” Tesla is checked regularly. Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) told “Stern” when asked about the accidents that this was not unknown to him, but he referred to Tesla.

Union demands an end to grievances

According to the wood and metal trade association, there were statistically 16 reportable accidents among 1,000 employees at car and car parts manufacturers in 2022. Tesla reported more than 4,000 employees in May 2022. For this number of employees, the statistical number of reportable accidents in the industry would be 64 - significantly less than in the "Stern" report. The cooperative did not provide any figures and emphasized that not all accidents could be attributed to the company. The companies are also different sizes.

The IG Metall union spoke of grievances. “We have been concerned about occupational safety at Tesla in Grünheide for a long time,” said the district manager for Berlin, Brandenburg and Saxony, Dirk Schulz. He told “Stern”: “My greatest concern is that someone will die at some point.”

A serious accident at work is an injury that is expected to require more than six weeks of in-patient treatment or permanent physical damage with a claim to accident pension. An accident at work must be reported if an employee is unable to work for more than three days or is killed.

Tesla: No incident among the accidents

The 26 environmental disasters include spills such as 15,000 liters of paint, 13 tons of aluminum and 50 and 150 liters of diesel. This emerges from data from the State Office for the Environment, which “Stern” reported on and which is also available to the dpa. According to the authorities, the incidents are operational disruptions and not incidents within the meaning of the Major Accidents Ordinance. Part of the site lies in the water protection area.

Tesla admitted that there had been several incidents on the factory site during construction and since it went into operation. However, the company says that none of the incidents was a major accident under the Federal Emissions Control Act and that no incidents caused environmental damage. If necessary, corrective measures were implemented.

Experts generally see a high risk for water

The research group leader for ecology and management of rivers and lake shores at the Leibniz Institute for Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries, Martin Pusch, spoke of a fundamentally high risk with regard to drinking water. “There is a high risk of impairment of the drinking water supply due to the low retention capacity of the subsoil,” Pusch told dpa.

When asked by “Stern”, Brandenburg’s Environment Minister Axel Vogel (Greens) admitted that problems had arisen on the factory premises, but saw no danger. When asked whether he could rule out that the groundwater beneath the factory was contaminated, he said, according to "Stern": "I can rule it out. The monitoring is working." Tesla has been manufacturing electric cars in Grünheide since March 2022. Environmentalists and nature conservationists see dangers. According to the company, around 11,000 employees work in the factory, producing around 250,000 vehicles per year. Tesla wants to expand the factory.

A great thread detailing Musks influences and his reason for being pro-russia

Twitter now no longer includes headline info when links are posted on tweets, which means you end up with tweets like this:

Edit: Huh, it includes it when you link it here, but not on Twitter itself. Basically on Twitter, the bit where it says "Did a truck crash spill sex toys on I-40 in Oklahoma City?" doesn't show up.

It doesn't even have to be about an individual. Remember the violence in Myanmar that was caused by misinformation that was on whats app and facebook?

And during the pandemic people died because of misinformation about vaccines.

Most racism is built upon lies.

The problem is that people like you and I (I mean educated, informed people) can pontificate about the "marketplace of ideas" and say that there should be robust debate and that bad ideas will be defeated, but that's not the case. Most people don't have the luxury of having the time to investigate. And even worse, it's human nature to believe what you want to believe. And social media makes it worse again. If you start liking posts/tweets that are untrue, you'll be fed more of it until your entire feed is nothing but untruths that reinforce each other.

This is how that tweet looks on Twitter itself.

A Random photo without any context, which really makes you want to click on it!!

Musk is trying to get people to create "native" posts on Twitter and not just link to other sites which just isn't how people use Twitter at all and never will be.

Yet another example of him not understanding how the platform actually is used by the user-base and desperately trying to generate traffic to try to bolster his collapsing ad revenue.

This is it to a tee. It's a trite and easy response to just go "robust debate is the answer" but that's simply not human nature or how media works. But what it does do is wash your hands of interrogating the belief that untrammeled free speech has no flaws, and neatly pushes the blame onto victims who feel targeted or abused. That it's up to gay or black people to defend themselves with "robust debate" when they shouldn't have to.

If you start liking posts/tweets that are untrue, you'll be fed more of it until your entire feed is nothing but untruths that reinforce each other.

This is the ultimate flaw of Social media that results in huge damage to debate and consensus.

All the Social media algorithms force you into an "echo chamber" of things you like or agree with and give you the perception that those things are the widely held consensus view because you are never seeing the other viewpoints or how prevalent they may be.

So , even if what you are watching/reading is technically true you are only ever seeing it through one lens on Twitter/Facebook/Instagram etc. so all your views and opinions, both good and bad just get more and more entrenched and armoured.

It reduces peoples ability to "see things from the other side" or to be able to place yourself in the wider context of how the rest of the world might think.

Comes at a great time, as BlueSky is sending more and more invite codes out.

Will they reach critical mass to outperform x?

Mastodon had the issues that it is too complicated.

Threads was rushed into the market without EU

And twitter is worse now since people who subscribe to twitter blue have their replies automatically at the top of a thread. It's automatically putting a certain view point there without any checks.

It's almost like Twitter has become ... ... an echo chamber?

But that can't be right. I've been told many times by insistent, emotive people that liberals and Big Woke has turned the world into ANTIFA loving echo chambers?

It couldn't be that Elon Musk was actually full of shít all along? Could it?

    🤡

I’ll never understand why some people equate free speech as this idea that your opinion has the right to be respected and acknowledged regardless about how untrue it is.

If you want a balanced debate and discussion, it needs moderation. Why? People are ássholes, and some will happily argue in bad faith by presenting things that are untrue as facts. So a main part of that is having a system that calls out bùllshit.

Anyone who thinks that it should be up to the person to decide if they believe it or not is someone really, really interested in disinformation.

    misinformation about vaccines

That's actually a very good example of one sided fight against misinformation. During the pandemic only the anti-vaccine misinformation was perceived as dangerous, and the pro-vaccine misinformation spread unchecked. People were misinformed that if they get the vaccine they will be immune and they won't be a danger to other vulnerable people. Which is not how vaccines work, and this kind of misinformation also killed people. This is why we should not have a department of truth deciding what is and what isn't misinformation, because in 9 cases out of 10 they won't know what they're doing.

  • Registered Users Posts: 16,219 ✭✭✭✭Grayson

People say that but I don't remember anyone telling people that a vaccine meant that they couldn't get it. I remember them saying that the vaccines reduced the risk of you developing serious symptoms.

And yes, if someone said that it protected you 100%, that should be removed.

TBH I think this whole post is a lie and a sad attempt to "both sides" vaccine conspiracy theories

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,964 ✭✭✭Cordell

I am very much pro vaccine, you can check my posting history in the Covid forum.

It was at the very least an assumption that was not only not addressed, it was used all over the world to establish policies like allowing boarding airplanes, entering restaurants and even entering your country only if you were vaccinated.

It's very simple being a bit hyperbolic about the effectiveness of vaccines and pretending they are dangerous/don't work are orders of magnitude different.

If you are pretend a vaccine/medicine is more effective than it actually is you will get up to date information from the relevant medical practitioner about the risks. Vaccine misinformation kills people whether that's Covid, measles etc. The idea they are even remotely comparable is delusional.

All people are asking Twitter to do is to follow the latest scientific consensus. All medicines undergo massive testing thats extensivly reviewed. The idea that this equates to the "ministry of truth" is straight out of the conspiracy theorist hand book.

Twitter have a responsibility to protect the general public from scammers/conspiracy theorists.

A bit like only allowing people to be in cars if they put on a seat belt , or only allowing people to ride motorbikes if they put on a helmet.

Imagine passing regulations that allowed people to do things when they are taking steps to mitigate their risks and stopping them if they don't?

    Why would they do that...

The change to X doesn't seem to have dented the popularity in Ireland.

There still is a huge demand for X among Irish people.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,220 ✭✭✭HalloweenJack

Again with this dismissal of a "department of truth" without giving any thought to what it might be. You refuse to entertain the idea that a service which tackles misinformation might have standards and guidelines for such a purpose. You seem to think it'll be some neckbeard looking stuff up on Wikipedia.

The latest move by Twitter is going to put more emphasis on the user to verify information and it is going to catch out the lazy, gullible ones.

A misinformation filter, with properly established verification guidelines and resources, is one way to solve this and prevent further misinformation getting through. Your continued scepticism can only be seen, at best, as an ignorance of how dangerous misinformation can be and how easily-influenced internet users are and, at worst, a desire to allow the flow of misinformation in order to champion consequence-free free speech.

Everybody loves a bit of X ,but what is "X"

    X-Factor ?

    X-Box?

    X-Travision?

    X-Lax ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,964 ✭✭✭Cordell

I'm not going to debate vaccines as I'm very much for them, I got them for me and my kids etc. What I ACTUALLY said it's quite clear.

You seem to think it'll be some neckbeard looking stuff up on Wikipedia

You seem to be right, that's exactly what is going to be. Neck beards and blue hairs. Or possibly both :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,220 ✭✭✭HalloweenJack

What proof do you have of that? How can you dismiss something before any details have been given out?

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,989 ✭✭✭Christy42

    Ecstasy surely?

Though I thought cocaine was the big one right now in Ireland but I am sure there is plenty of market space for other drugs.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,964 ✭✭✭Cordell

Because that's the kind of people who would work for this department on truth, they would get a kick out of it even. Them and those with no other option, both not a good match for this kind of role.
