The not widely known story of what was once the world's most expensive book, encrusted with 1,050 jewels including specially cut rubies, topazes and emeralds, and over 100 sq ft of gold leaf. The binding for the book was the most remarkable the world had ever seen.

The lavishly decorated Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám (Great Omar) was rumoured to be cursed as its first edition now lies at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, having gone down with the Titanic which sunk 110 years ago to this day. And a replacement, made at great expense, was subsequently destroyed in London during the Blitz.

I have read much previously about both the book itself and its original creator, and the sinking of the world's most famous ship, the Titanic. I wont tell you any more so as not to spoil your reading of the following article which is an excellent factual account of the intrigue and mystique that surrounds the 'Great Omar.'
