Rotary phone issues

We have got a northern telecom rotary phone. When we plugged it into the landline, we had a dial tone. When dialling a number the dialling tone changed to the engaged tone. There was no audible sound, yet When my mobile number was dialled indoors, we were able to hear each other when in different room but neither phone rang. My husband has very limited phone knowledge, however, we grew up with rotary phones, this one has 82 on the bottom, presumably 1982, and appears to be model 500. If anyone has any information, it would be wonderful, we would love to be able to use this phone, relive the nostalgia. Thank you in advance.

Your phone provider may not support rotary phones - it uses a system called pulse-dialling to dial the number and was replaced with tone/DTMF dialling. I could be wrong but I think pulse support went away for some providers back in ~2007. You could check with them to see if its supported.
