shotgun licence

I had a limited shotgun licence for nearly 20 years & gave it up around 2008. I would like to get into shooting again & I've spoken to our local club secretary & no problems there.

I've tried to make contact with our local Garda station but it's always closed, I've rang & left my number but they haven't replied. I wanted to ask if it was necessary to complete a course as I had a licence previously & did I need to buy a gun cabinet or was it okay to break it & have a trigger lock.

There was a leaflet in the station window with the name of a guy who ran courses locally, but when I came home & checked on the NARGC site for Cork his name isn't on it.

I suppose my option is to just do a course & buy a second hand cabinet & fill in the form & post it through their door. When I spoke our secretary he suggested maybe trying another station but it comes under another district to my local.

Any suggestions please gents ?

Going by the questions, if you have previously held a firearms cert then you are deemed to be competent, so no course necessary. Only first time applicants need to prove competence.

Best person to ask about the storage requirements would be the district firearms officer, so have a look on the garda website and find your local station and it will have the district contact info(ie here: https://www.garda.ie/garda/en/contact-us/station-directory/boherbue.html). Call and ask the district office, they will be able to give you a definitive answer as the minimum is a trigger lock and stored separately, but most districts require a safe now. Or they will at the least be able to point you towards your firearms officer and they will have the answer.

Personally, I wouldn't go spending money on either a course or a safe in anticipation ;)

Although not a requirement for the possession of one shotgun I personally think that all guns should be stored in a gun safe.

Although it is an additional expense I think it is a worthwhile purchase for security and peace of mind.

An investment that will last a lifetime.
