it's going to happen there is saudi money everywhere, and money talks and the players will follow the money 100%, maybe not straight away but they will eventually, the pga tour would want to be careful trying to play bully boy with the players, things change and things evolve i just hope everyone can still play in the majors when the dust settles

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,419 ✭✭✭dublin49

Agree its only a very small percentage of overall pro ranks that are truly rich ,the thing is Norman and Mickelson are very much at the top of that group so should really be more picky about who they work for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 800 ✭✭✭SeeMoreBut

A pro who retain his PGA tour card is living a comfortable life. European tour they wouldn't have money issues in same boat but drop below that it wouldn't be same. Of course Norman doesn't care about them all he wants is the top players. A bit like the money given out on pga tour for social media presence. Only one way and that was main guys and the biggest one took home the cash and he only drove it once and that was off a road in 2021.

PGA, Liv etc pretend they care for all but only want the big fish

Sorry I have to disagree there's a lot more than just the likes of DJ and Rory. Paul Dunne for instance and the likes..

journey men now are millionaires Harrington has made that point before, but if you can make 5 times that and more on the liv tour you'd be mad not to go. This selective outrage about the saudis is crazy, their money is all over the world in lots of different sports. The pga will have to evolve it's rules or it could be left behind

Just watching the PGA here on Sky Sports and they have advertised “Visit Saudi Arabia” multiple times yet Jamie Weir (employed by Sky Sports) tried to take the moral high ground in his interview with Greg Norman last week.

    Hypocritical much?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,082 ✭✭✭✭Mantis Toboggan

If you look deep enough the whole thing is hypocritical, like all these yanks harping on about human right abuses in Saudi not realizing its their country supplying all the weapons!

    Line up announced.

DJ missing his sponsors event for it

some of the career highlights aren’t much highlights.

I don’t care either way but they’re all a bunch of cowards for letting Phil take the hit

Surprised with DJ but he must have got a massive appearance fee. Must go in also as the early favorite.

That line up isn't going to have people tuning in en masse. 2 top 20 golfers and a fairly poor field overall. They might have to throw DJ a party before the final round.

JP McManus would have gotten a stronger league off the ground.

    Love Poulter's highlights. "Former World No.5" :D :D

Its like when Wayne Mardle is on the darts for some of the above, "5 Time Semi-Finalist" they put up for him.

Fair play to DJ, really doesn't give a F what anyone thinks of him. It's mostly PR and potential consequences stopping other guys playing for double the money against a weaker field.

It's a stronger field than it was looking for a while. DJ is a bug enough name to test the PGA Tour's resolve and the fallout, if not the tournament, should be interesting at least.

The tour have holidayed DJ before so maybe that factored slightly into his thinking. DJ is also oblivious/thicks-kinned/ignorant/composed (choose the most appropriate) enough to rock up to Brookline saying what's the big deal!

i'm looking forward to it fk the pga why should they control everything. Phil should just come back now and play hiding away is pointless he should have defended his major

DJ is disappointing, but as outlined by The Big easy , a great pick as he is impervious to any issues ...for example, he said the best thing about The Masters is the sandwiches.

Nothing surprising about golf now, it lost its soul a long long time ago...It is the ultimate sport of capitalism and right wing politics. This is the natural end point.

A bit rich anyone in golf coming out against anything , when it has been linked to Trump and Dubai for years , the European tour are the ones that opened this door and basically sold European golf to another continent and ethos.

The amount of money that DJ got for this must be extraordinary....

Youdoget the impression that DJ just isn't all that into golf anymore. This is exactly the thing he's looking for. Handful of tournaments a year. Dumptrucks full of money. Win-win

Who is going to televise it?

Is that DJ done from playing the PGA tour?

Anyone thinking Middle East or Chinese money is not already littered into current sporting purses need to wise up.

Re Norman, he has always had an issue with the PGA setup, old boys club etc, his last attempt of a breakaway directly led to the WGC rota.

I think this is a case of sit back and see what happens, if someone wants to golf X, Y or Z they should not face bans, this is nothing to do with the sponsors, it's the PGA wanting to keep control

Delighted to be rid of Sergio...did PGA and European Tour pay them for that...

It's not the strongest field but DJ is a massive coup for them. Also once people see guys like Gooch or Wiesberger pulling in $2M+ plus cheques it will almost certainly turns heads of guys still playing on the PGA Tour. There's probably plenty of them happy to miss the first few events to see what the fallout is. If the Tour ban someone and it gets legally challenged and overturned we will see loads more names jumping in to play a few tournaments a year in LIV and have a lighter schedule.

    4* Majors

    4* LIV

    Fedex Cup Playoffs

    Riv

    Players

Then maybe a one or two from Phoenix, Memorial, Pebble, API etc

I could see that appealing to plenty.

Lee Westwood has 44 professional wins. Impressive.

DJ has little interest in the heritage of golf - I just don't think the yanks care about that as much as the European players.

More power to any of the more Snr players moving over - why wouldn't they make as much as possible for the few years that have left. Its costs a lot of money to live the high life.

The current field isn't that impressive and wouldn't have me running to watch it.

Is there anything different to the propose format or just a straight forward stroke play event.

Would be interesting to have a competition over 1-2 days rather than 4. Would encourage more attacking golf but would also give a better chance to the lower ranked players.

With Sergio, Westwood, Kaymer, McDowell & Poulter involved, someone from Boards.ie might get the next European Ryder Cup captaincy due to come up.....😀

Guess the RC doesn't really mean all that much........follow the money.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,239 ✭✭✭Pussyhands

What happened with Phil? Was he the first out to say he was joining it and got a lot of heat and now kinda disappeared?

I don't know what to make of it. It's all about the money, but so is the PGA.

We're all out for the money. China, Russia, Saudis always win in the end because money.

And I don't get comments like "how much money do they actually want?"...people always want more no matter how much they have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,108 ✭✭✭Xander10

I think they are 54 hole tournaments.

    Might suit Rory🤣

After he said "it's dead in the water" with his usual speak before you think, it'll be another embarrassing climb down for him when he eventually plays in them, he's already backtracked to try and save face saying his stance has softened, it's all about money that's the way of the world and the old boys club in the pga tour will have to evolve

Biggest surprise has to be no Kuchar on the list 😋
