Yes, the GFS can undercook Irish summertime temperatures - I think it's down to the fact that alot of the grid points are "just" offshore:

whereas UK ones are "just" onshore. This means at most we get 4 points east-west whereas UK gets 6!

I honestly don't think this is possible. Not yet anyway. A 32C is believeable for Shannon but certaintly not Meath. The UK temperatures were also fairly unbelieveable up to yesterday 43s and 44s. Tonight it's the Irish temperatures that are a bit far fetched. We all know how difficult it is to get even 30C on a widespread basis when you take into affect sea breezes and our great difficulties with breaking cloud. I dunno what to say if this actually ended up verifying but if it did records would be breaking.

It’s possible, 33.3c was recorded twice at least (if not thrice) in the 1850-1890 timeframe in Markree and Kilkenny and there is also a 33.4c recorded in Dublin though that one was discounted as it was unsure if the correct screening was used: https://www.ukweatherworld.co.uk/forum/index.php?/topic/115480-date-of-temperature-of-333-deg-c-at-kilkenny-in-se-ireland/&tab=comments#comment-1007404

That thread is an interesting read.

Gosh. I didn't think yesterday got that warm in Ireland. I know it got 24 in Laois. That's a serious temperature.

Going to be in Cambridge from Monday evening until Wednesday evening, just hope the queues aren't too long in Dublin airport and the air con works in Cambridge!!!

Clearing now, but this morning was absolute slurry in Cork. Warm, moist, horrid. Much more rain than was forecast.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 16,901 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

Rain was fairly heavy in Meath last night, wasn't expecting anything more than a few drops. Very difficult sleeping last night with such a warm night. Much cooler between today and Friday and then temperatures taking off again at the weekend.

Think they have it in the meeting room I will be in for the 2 days, the hotel definitely doesn't though................lived in Sydney for 7 years without air con in the apartment, I'll be fine!! 😱

GFS 6z dialing temperatures back to a more sensible level. Low to mid 30s for the UK and high twenties to 30/31C for Ireland on the Sunday and Monday. The 40C for the UK is looking less and less likely now. Could be fairly thundery on the Monday and Tuesday as a breakdown to less hot weather happens.

Well, with places in NI getting to 31.3c last July it must certainly be possible for Meath to get a 32c at some point in time. And with uppers of 20c across central parts of Ireland on Monday / Tuesday it must be possible (depending on cloud amounts of course).

1000-850 partial thickness reaches almost 142dam late Mon / early Tues :-

    +138. 140.2 158.4
    +141. 140.6 158.6
    +144. 140.6 158.1
    +147. 140.4 157.3
    +150. 140.5 156.6
    +153. 140.7 156.2
    +156. 140.9 155.8
    +159. 141.2 154.9
    +162. 141.4 154.0
    +165. 141.8 153.8
    +168. 141.7 152.7
    +171. 141.9 151.5
    +174. 141.3 150.0
    +177. 140.8 149.6
    +180. 140.8 149.3
    +183. 140.9 149.4
    +186. 140.9 149.5
    +189. 140.2 149.8

PLUS! I'm out of the country from Sat (off to Majorca), so that pretty much guarantees record temps will be recorded here back at home LOL!

How warm we get depends on how warm Spain and France get in the coming days. Keeping a close eye there. There's a 38c in Spain at 11am. Likely to top out at 43c there today a few more degrees in the coming days possibly 46c.

Madrid is forecast to hit 42c which would beat its all-time official record which I think is 41.2c

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,291 ✭✭✭✭Thelonious Monk

Yes looks like 40+ for the next 7 days or something in Madrid, Christ, how would you manage in a city with those temps

  • Registered Users Posts: 601 ✭✭✭WJL

When 30-31 is forecast here, that can easily climb a degree or 2. 25c is often forecast and you get 27 or 28c like yesterday.

    Cloud cover is the biggie.

Yesterday was a bit unusual I thought. Here in Dunshaughlin it was forecast to get to 24C, maybe 25C at the most. Very little sunshine and mostly cloudy yet it got to 27C. Never experienced such a high temperature during cloudy conditions in this country before.

  • Registered Users Posts: 601 ✭✭✭WJL

I was surprised at the temps coming in from cloudy areas too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,418 ✭✭✭✭Supercell

Temperature shot up here as skies are clearing, wind still WSW for now, currently 25C, likely to dip soon as no doubt the sea breeze will get going soon .

23C here at Dunshaughlin but mostly cloudy.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,084 ✭✭✭pauldry

Got over 30c in 1983 and it was pure cloudy some of those days

39c on the NW coast of Portugal where it has been 15 to 18c a week or two ago.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭lolie

24c here yesterday also despite it being fully cloudy.

Today is back to the dull grey overcast weather of last week and 18c.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,081 ✭✭✭OldRio

Weather today has been drizzle for most of this morning and afternoon. About 15/16C early this afternoon up to 19C now

I just went out with the dog. Its really cloudy and overcast but my god the air is dead and its so hot and muggy. 😓 South carlow. Not sure what temperature it is.

Best day in a long time here, been sunny since about 12.

  • Registered Users Posts: 260 ✭✭ascophyllum

Drizzly start but beautiful warm sunny day on the West Coast, out of the breeze it feels very warm, even i. The breeze it's quite nice

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,980 ✭✭✭Slashermcguirk

Phoenix Park seems to be the warmest spot again today looking at 4pm readings. Good bit cooler though at 23 degrees vs nearly 28 yesterday. You know its a good spell of weather when 23 is much cooler

UKMO has 20c isotherm covering the entire country at day 6. Maybe 22c isotherm for southern parts, I’m outside hard to see my phone properly for the 22c part. Ridiculous if that comes to pass.
