"Yesterday, Monday 18 July 2022, saw multiple temperature records provisionally broken at various Met Éireann weather stations nationwide. Notably, Phoenix Park, Co Dublin has reached a number of milestones, by provisionally recording its highest shaded air temperature since data was first recorded here in the early 1800s, reaching 33.0°C (12.8°C above its 1981-2010 long-term average of 20.2°C) on Monday 18th July 2022 around 2:40 pm (13:40 UTC)."

Does anybody know what LTA "Long term average" stat they are comparing to? Is that July daily high temp average?

Heavy showers going through here tonight in Kerry but escaped the heaviest so far.

I'm not sure, but it really should be the LTA high for just July 18th.

Today was a real atmospheric river event.

That really is a bad way to do it. Not so much at this time or the year, when there's little difference between the July LTA and each day's LTA, but in months where the slope is greatest (centred around the equinoxes) the daily LTAs at thr start and end of the month are very different to that month's LTA.

I really never understood why smaller timescales, such as daily, weekly or even decadal (10-day periods) are not used, like they are in many other countries.

Very heavy rain last night in Leitrim. It was that heavy at times it woke us up on a number of occasions. Warm and humid night.

Low lying fields are flooded this morning.

Rained all day yesterday and raining again this morning.

I see my news feed full of clickbait about scorchers and summer returns imminent. What’s the actual story! Is there some good weather on the horizon or is this more exaggerated nonsense. Thanks.

It’s looking quite good from this weekend onwards. Highs won’t be anything crazy though, low to mid 20s. Possibly high 20s too I guess.

France and UK could get hot again.

Thanks for this. Sounds promising. Been keeping an eye out for updates on the FI thread but it’s been very quiet. Going camping with kids to Achill next week so really hoping weather is good. Do you know if the west is likely to do well too?

Perhaps a bit of rain in the west on Saturday but Sunday onwards looking dry.

We could do with a bit of rain in the west to be honest.

Miserable dark misty day in Donegal with heavy drizzle. Chatting to people from Gweedore yesterday and they were saying it's one of the worst summers they can ever remember there

Edit: And not long after posting it's suddenly stopped and some patches of blue are visible, hopefully might squeeze a nice evening out of the day yet

    Sherkin 16 degrees

Out of interest, here are the daily Tmax station data (blended ECA&D) for all the July 18ths at a few Irish stations of recent note (only up to 2021).

Amazingly, the data for Dublin Airport go back to 1867. On closer inspection, they use the Phoenix Park data to fill in the gaps. Not really that helpful.

I don't have PP data at hand, but for what it is worth, the LTA (assuming the 81-10 mean) July 18th average maxima for Casement is 19.8c. The highest LTA daily July maxima at that station is 20.7c, and this is for the 26th of the month.

So warm in Dublin today and sun beating down. 25 degrees approaching 6pm

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,980 ✭✭✭Slashermcguirk

24 degrees at 6pm in Dublin. Oak park top of the pile on 25 degrees on 6pm reading. Some stations in the west recoding nearly 10 degrees cooler at 16, huge contrast between east and west

Damn wind is back with a vengeance in Waterford. Dull most of the day and muggy.

  • Registered Users Posts: 601 ✭✭✭WJL

Turned into a cracking day in North Kilkenny.

  • Registered Users Posts: 601 ✭✭✭WJL

Funny. In winter the east and south east look on with snow envy at the hills in Donegal and the North West as they get snow from North westerlies etc. Same with wind storms. They are the better locations.

Then in summer it's often a role reversal the south east, east and parts of the Midlands and south are drier, sunnier and warmer under azores high influence. And Donegal and the North West are dull and damp and have to listen to us posting about sun and warmth. Such differences in a small country.

Last of the sunshine just before 21.27 here in Kerry this evening, got up to 19.9C and currently 16.7C.
