Did I do the right thing with fledglings?

    Hey all.

    So today I heard a lot of commotion coming from my back garden and looked out the window only to see a bird and a cat, it was a young bird and the cat ended up going after it and I assume killed it, anyway some time passed and I heard all this chirping so looked out the window again only to see three fledglings on the ground, one was stuck in a shore I have and the other two were just standing there, the area is very urban and littered with cats, wild and pets, so I went down and took them out, I ended up handing them into my vets but now I'm wondering if I done the right thing...

    I no in general you're supposed to leave them alone and I would have but the situation they were in made me intervene, it's a very enclosed area, all concrete with no cover and as I said there are cats in the area 24/7 so I didn't think they'd stand a chance, now I'm starting to think I did more harm than good and should of let nature take it's course.

    Usually it's best to leave them alone, if they're not in immediate danger - their parents would be nearby. If there's a next time, see if you can stop the cat (and I don't mean harm it!).

    All things considered, bringing them to the vet is the lesser of two evils, at least they know how to handle them or can contact people who do - for instance, my local vet usually contacts someone who's specialised in wildlife rehabilitation and runs a licenced bird sanctuary.
