Edging for Lawnmower

Hi,

Looking to put down some edging along a support wall to run the wheels of the lawnmower on to avoid the need for strimming the edge and avoid ruining the side of the mower on the dashed wall.

Any simple ides that are cost effective, easy to install and durable? Just need something flat to run the wheel on - don't want anything raised.

Dig a trench along the wall about 4 inches deep, then concrete in a line of brick or cobbleblock.

Commercially we used to put in mowing strips along all building edges that were similar to this American product

The size is 900 x 90 x 55mm. Not seen them in Ireland but if I wanted them I'd cut them out of a paving slab. The advantage over bricks or blocks is they are quicker to lay. Personally if I was cutting them I'd make them 150 mm deep (rather than 90mm) because the grass will soon grow over them. You want them about 10-15mm below the level of the soil so when you put the mower wheels over the edge on the mowing strip it cuts a little closer that along with the vacuum from a rotary mower keeps the edges tidy.

How would you lay them?

Seen this on Amazon - assume these are just pushed into ground as it is. Anything else along this line?

The concrete kerbs would be good, but I have a feeling the metal push in yokes would look dreadful and last about 5 minutes (they even look dreadful in the illustrations!)

Top one would be perfect. We used to spot bed them. Dig out about 150mm deep fill with about 90mm quary waste (804) hammer it down

then three dollops of cement and tap them in. Obviously no good around beds with round edges.

Just in case you misunderstand me we used those around the edges of walls to provide a mowing strip as the concrete strips obviously won't go around corners. Around beds I've always used bricks on edge or concrete paver blocks.

Thanks - yes, that is where I need to use them. Can't get mower close enough along wall to do a clean cut without the need to use the strimmer to tidy up.

If the ground around the edges of the walls are already well compacted I'd dig out and just lay on sand. If you don't use chemicals to spray off then you still might want to point up on the wall side and between the strips.

Personally i wouldn't countenance anything other than a continuous bed of concrete, otherwise the grass will root underneath and come up between the edging and the wall, which would look even worse.

Used to mow acres of housing estate with mowing strips. Very little grass used to come up and what did got sprayed off occasionally.

It still did though which is the point i'm making, and be even worse on a dashed wall. If i was going to the trouble i'd concrete them in and be done.

I'm fairly sure your concrete would fail along the join and still give the same tiny problem.
