Sevilla 1-0 up. Howler from Maguire. 🤭 Well done Sevilla, excellent pressure. De Gea probably at fault as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,522 ✭✭✭✭fullstop

Comical. Maguire has no awareness what’s around him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,257 ✭✭✭Augme

Laurel and Hardy on song again. 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,665 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

I'm no fan of Maguire, he's useless in the main, but that goal is 100% in DE Gea. He could see the pitch ahead of him, and played a slow straight pass to Maguire with 3 players converging on him. Maguire hadn't a chance. Shocking from De Gea.

Really unfair on Maguire from the TV producers showing close ups of him continually and none of a De Gea, Spanish TV pictures is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,358 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Maguire did have an out for the goal, he could have played it back to De Gea. Also, Maguire asked for the pass from De Gea.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,665 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

Edit, long Ballin now andde Gea jogs out half arsed with no call to Maguire who has to clear it with DDe G in no man's land. Lad is a liability

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,210 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

    Yeah you're right.

Maguire was stupid asking for the pass itself, and might have not been aware of the full picture behind him. Poor communication perhaps.

But DDG could see the full picture and still chose to make the pass. He could have chose to pass elsewhere.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,522 ✭✭✭✭fullstop

Maguire called for the ball. He took the pass completely square to his own goal. If he’s on the half turn he just needed to let the ball run past him and he’s out the gap but he completely panicked. If you’re not capable of taking the ball on the turn don’t call for it there.

I do agree though that De Gea shouldn’t have given him the ball, he’s awful on the ball so why take the chance.

    2-0 Sevilla. Fully deserved.

Ah, this will be ruled out for offside. Brian Kerr needs to go to Specsavers.

It was closer than I thought, mere centimetres in it. Should have stayed onside. United are blessed.

United should be 3 goals behind at half-time instead of the one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,358 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Not even a minute and a half into the second half and it looks like it's 2-0 to Sevilla.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,358 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Wan-Bissaka and Sancho substituted at half-time for Shaw and Rashford. You could have subbed the whole team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,358 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

What a goal line scramble. Should have been 3-0.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,901 ✭✭✭hynesie08

Haven't seen a collapse this funny since that fan at the start.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,257 ✭✭✭Augme

Should have been a red card for Anthony but Seville will probably be happier to see him stay on.

Antony shaking the ref's hand for not sending him off and he gets a yellow instead. Easily could have been red. I suppose he needed to make more contact, but the intent was there.

From being 2 up to 4 - 2 down looks like a bit of a bottle job. I still can't believe scoring 2 OG's in a game after being in complete control.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,358 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Sevilla should be out of sight, but as long as it remains like this, it just takes 1 goal for them to get nervous.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,884 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX

    Garbage

    Hilarious

Comical and embarrassing United continue to give. De Gea? This one is all on him. 3-0.

I've always thought that De Gea has no passion to play for United.

His performance tonight sums his time at United up, it really does.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,665 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

    Lol

I've always said it, DE Gea is a liability at the top level. Midtable quality keeper at best. On top of that, he's Baan all over the shop this evening from the start, dunno what's annoying him, but bad errors for 2 of the 3 goals so far.

They're stuck with him with him being such a big earner, but they are gong nowhere with him in goal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,884 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX

Is this the DeGea fella refusing to take a pay cut ?

If they had any sense, they would bounce his arse out. Long may he continue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,257 ✭✭✭Augme

A sublime first touch from DDG to take the ball out of the sky and to softly lay it off for the Seville player to stick it into an empty net.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,358 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

That 3rd goal gets funnier the more you think about it or see it. What was he thinking? You can't trust a keeper who does something like that. And he was partially at fault for the first goal as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,884 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX

    Casemiro

Too old, too slow, too much much smoke blown up his hole for passable performances against shite in the PL.

Laughing and joking with the ref at the final whistle. Sure he probably got paid today, so he's happy.

  • Registered Users Posts: 258 ✭✭It is a Dunne Deal

An absolutely hilarious performance against the worst Sevilla team in years. The majority of those Man Utd players couldn't give a shite absolutely rotten.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,755 ✭✭✭giveitholly

Did Scholes say that Utd are a better team than Sevilla?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,358 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

I was thinking there's no way Abraham is onside in that replay. Abraham celebrating and sure he was. VAR gave it. Millimetres on that line drawn. It doesn't seem right though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,358 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

That Feyenoord player had to go. Very bad challenge.

He's a goalkeeper, not Franz Beckenbauer f.f.s. Keepers should not be expected to play calmly out from the back simply because their not skilful ball players and look uncomfortable in possession, even the likes of Ederson and Allison. DeGea is a shot stopper who should never stray far from his line. Either of his centre backs should have cleared that ball he attempted to control.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,636 ✭✭✭IncognitoMan

Ah here. He is still a professional footballer at the highest level of the game. He should be able to clear a ball with his feet.

Especially when he has made the decision to come for that ball. He absolutely has to know what he's doing with it when he gets there.

    Basic stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,210 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

This isn't the 90's anymore. It's 2023, footballers are meant to be able to pass the ball with their foot. The idea that 4 lads are defenders and sit deep and do last ditch slide tackles and blocks only is long gone. Likewise the idea that a goalkeeper just makes saves on his goal line only is long gone. Everybody needs to be comfortable on the ball to some degree.

There's an irony in saying that DDG "should never stray far from his line" because that is one of his biggest weaknesses - he is too scared to come off his line to claim a cross put into the box, and results in a good few goals conceded. Let alone the obvious weakness in his passing.

There was a good article a couple years ago about how £50m AWB was a 90's era full back playing in the 2020's era. It's the same as DDG. He's a 00/10's era goalkeeper playing in 2023.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,257 ✭✭✭Augme

Very few goalkeepers are good with the ball at their feet and at the rest of the parts of being a goalkeeper. And the ones who are cost £70m+. Anyone who sits there and thinks that trying yo get the likes of DDG, AVB and Maguire to play a passing brand of football and needs to pass out from the back at all times needs their head examined tbh. If I was United fan I'd be worried about EtH lack of flexibility in that area.

The third goal was completely DDG fault though, the first was just players of limited quality trying to implement the managers tactics. Why they are being asked to do that is the big question imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,665 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

This sums up DE Gea entirely, was out 20 years too late to be top level. Fair play to him though, he's managed to wangle a huge wage from United for years, earning tip dollar for average ability-in many ways he's symptomatic of a lot of Uniteds recruitment problems over the last decade or so

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,211 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Watched the highlights of the Roma Feyenoord tie.

What a game. End to end, drama, late goals, shithousery. It had it all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,184 ✭✭✭chicorytip

If you have quick, mobile defenders you can employ a high defensive line as well as get turned quickly if the opposition are trying to play through you or knocking long balls over the top. This should negate the need for the keeper to come charging thirty yards off his line just to boot the ball into the stand, as frequently happens. United had Shaw, Wan-Bissaka, Maguire and Lindelof last night who are each reasonably quick and mobile playing against opposition strikers who were neither particularly quick not mobile, yet got torn to shreds. That's a massive indictment of the coaching rather than failures of individual players.

I really hope Sevilla batter them.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,312 ✭✭✭McBain11

I've spent decades watching despicable refereeing performances, but the extra time second half performance by the ref in the Seville Juve game tonight is right up there. I'd say the ball way in play for about 30 seconds in total. Now, I'm well aware the players are mostly to blame for the amount of feigning injury, delaying throw ins, delaying kick outs etc, but for referees to allow this stuff to go on to the level that the ref did tonight was deplorable.

The best part was when he gave Acuna the 2nd yellow for time wasting at a throw in (the ball had been dead for about 3 mins at that stage). The ref didn't realize he'd booked Acuna earlier in the game, or that card was never ever going to be given. He was shocked when he realized he'd have to correctly send him off. Complete and utter rot.

I'd love to see the official breakdown of the amount of time the ball was actually in play in that second half of extra time. The sport is absolutely dying with the amount of this garbage time wasting being allowed to going on in every game now.

The last 10min of that Sevilla Juve game had about 90sec of football in it.

All the big games are like that now, non stop time wasting. It is ruining games. Uefa either need to get on top of it, or else bring in the 60min game, and stop the clock when there is a stoppage.

This is really Roma and Sevilla's season boiling down to one game.

Whoever wins it, they can say they've had a very good season. Winning an important trophy and qualification for the CL group stages - which they haven't managed through league performance.

Mourinho in particular will be desperate to show that he's producing something of substance with this Roma team. For me, it's a very average team he has built. Very hard to see if he's actually on the verge of turning them into a force. But then it's a Mourinho team in a final. But Sevilla have the pedigree in this competition, so they will not be lacking in belief you would imagine.

Should be an interesting game. I have a small wager on Roma from earlier in the competition, so hoping they can win it. What do you guys think? Who are you backing to take the trophy home? Another one to cram into the Sevilla trophy cabinet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,211 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

    Going to pens.

  • Registered Users Posts: 478 ✭✭Run Forest Run

Yeah, certainly wouldn't rule that out alright... but it's a final so you never know.

We might get an exciting game. Sometimes even Mourinho's teams get drawn into an end to end match...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,211 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

We probably need Sevilla to score 1st, and early.
