Judge refuses to accept character witness statements

Have to say I agree with the Judge. The Judge wouldn't accept character references for a man who was found guilty of rape, indecent and sexual assault of three children unless those giving the references came to court to take stand and be cross examined on them. Should this be standard in cases such as this?

they decided to do it before the guilty verdict was reached, i assume?
No, this is all part of sentencing post verdict.

No, what I meant was that their decision to give a character reference was made before the trial. After someone is found guilty, some may have a change of heart about defending that notion in court.
