First trailer has appeared; to no surprise it plays up the mood of Chadwick Bozeman being no longer with us.

Absolutely no clue as to what the plot of the film is going to be.

I'm thinking with T'Challa dead, there is nobody next in line (Shuri might not be eligible since she's a woman) . Namor showing up could be him trying to take the Throne.

I doubt the Wakandans have such rules that might stop Shuri being next in line, given that their God Bast is female, the prominence of the Dora Milage, women like Nakia etc.

However, we saw in BP1 that even though T'Challa was already the Panther, he had to be stripped of the powers and face anyone the leaders of the 5 tribes put forward to challenge for the throne and therefore the right to be Black Panther. If T'Challa is dead and Shuri is next in line, any of the tribes could challenge for the throne, and let's face it, they'd kick the sh*t out of her.

So, do they not challenge out of respect to T'Challa and Angela Bassett's character? Has Killmonger burning all the heart-shaped herbs meant they're unable to make a new Black Panther (and therefore part of the film is about trying to find a way to do so)?

I'd definitely rather Nakia become the new Black Panther rather than Shuri. I know Shuri does it in the comics but her character from the first film really doesn't lend herself to becoming the type of character Black Panther should be.

Based on the little we see of him the actor for Namor looks to have the presence down.

The last film on the current MCU slate I have a genuine interest in, albeit with modest expectations given the cursed and tragic production it went through. It’s a film that will have been totally reimagined in a short enough period of time, so hard to know what the result will be.

That said, Black Panther is my favourite MCU film despite its flaws because Coogler made a film that strove to be more invested in history, community and actual themes. The anonymous CG action undermined things, but other than that it was a definite Marvel highlight.

Hard to tell much from the trailer, but that transition to Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Alright’ is *chef’s kiss*

Black Panther 1 was exactly the case where a good MCU film was completely undone by the formula's insistence on the climactic CGI battle and farming out the action to the 2nd unit and render farms. The car chase was bad enough but the big battle at the end ruined some of the goodwill, and jarred with the style of the rest of the film.

So looks like with T'challa dead, other countries will try to invade and take over

Good approach for a story, given that there is no heir so yeah, MCU Succession Crisis.

I wonder will we see Black Panther die (in costume for the sake of taste); if the movie will start with the funeral, or immediately after the death.

What was the general consensus on here about the 1st film?

I stopped watching it after about 35min. Had heard rave reviews about it beforehand, but honestly couldn't see what the appeal was. Thought it was rubbish.

So as you'd guess, installment number 2 won't be for me.

I'm lost with all the confusion. I don't know a lot about Wakanda except for the first film and EMH

Trailer looked like it was saying the story will cover:

    • that something happened to T'Challa and there'll be a lot of mourning.
    • that there'll also be a water race/tribe.
    • that there'll be a fight between at least the Jabari and the water race/tribe.
    • maybe also that something brings some of the people fighting together because one woman in one scene seemed to be about to fight the Dora Milaje.. but in the next she's with them in a defensive pose

Regarding the water tribe along with Namor, I wonder if they will have them be Atlanteans who can breath underwater or have them be another Tribe in Wakanda. I'm guessing Namor and his tribe show up so he can be king

I thought it was one of the strongest Marvel movies. The hype about it related to it being "the first black superhero movie" was not only wrong (Blade for example) but cringeworthy. But I thought the film itself was very good (Bar the typical shonky CGI final battle that MCU seem to use the whole time). I thought all the characters were very engaging and Killmonger, despite having a terrible name, was the most interesting antagonist until Thanos. The whole casino/chase sequence was fantastic. Was genuinely exciting (The music/choir kicking in as they launched into the fight was brilliant). The music in general was very good because MCU music is generally pretty forgettable.

I didn't find it "worthy" or "Important" if you know what I mean. I just thought it was a good MCU movie.

Same as yourself I'm hoping for Nakia - much more suitable character than Shuri in-world. And from a film/marketing perspective, she's a much more bankable star to have in the suit too - Lupita Nyong'o has major movie-star clout, and someone you'd have actively cast as a superhero anyway, where Letitia Wright just isn't (not to mentioned all the trouble Marvel had with her anti-vax stance!)

I think I read there's some sort of rights thing around using Atlantis with Aquaman also using it. Maybe it was just someone theorising it was an issue.

  • Registered Users Posts: 31,715 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

I'd imagine Atlantis as a concept is pretty open as far as rights go - in that in and of itself (like the likes of New York, or Paris) it's public domain. Where issues might come in is if in they infringe on (or get too close to) specific uses/depictions of Atlantis that were invented for Aquaman. They should be ok as long as they specifically stick with stuff that they already have precedent with via their own comics, and avoid ideas that look too close to AM if possible.

(As an example, the original Little Shop of Horrors is public domain now, so it's fair game for adaptation - however any tweaks to the story that resemble the changes made for the 1986 version are totally off limits)

Winnie the Pooh as well exists as the most recent example, and related given we're talking Disney. All the early stories are now public domain and as long as you don't use the iconic Disney red waistcoat look, you're safe.

Same with Frankenstein: public domain but the specific "bolts in the neck" green skinned version is copyrighted by Universal. So adapt away, just don't make it look like the Boris Karloff version.

atlantian water tribe picks fight with land locked sub saharan country... erh... ok ??

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,078 ✭✭✭TheIrishGrover

So all my comments are based on the movies. I have not read the comics and know nothing about that universe so I can't comment on something like "Well in issue XYZ, Shuri became the Pink Panther who of course was doing nixers at night as Black Panther 2".

Yeah, there is a gravitas to Nakia (Both the character and Nyong'o) that Shuri lacks. And that's fair enough. She's the spy/lone warrior (As opposed to the rest of the army) and Shuri is the tech wizard. And, yeah, Wright's anti-vaxx stance and other reports have (rightly or wrongly) probably tarnished her a little. Sounds like a right pain in the a** to work with (Again, all rumour).

As for recasting T'challa? Yeah, they couldn't. I don't care if you were able to go back and get a young, ripped, dynamic Morgan Freeman, Boseman's performance was just so captivating that he was irreplaceable. Ironically, about the only person who could possibly have replaced him would have been Michael B Jordan.

Having just watched the trailer, the design and cinematography looks amazing and holy moly. Is that Nyong'o at the start??! Wow. What a look. Phew

Interestingly (Meant to spoiler that. Sorry):

I know it's a trailer and things are carefully edited and can be (intentionally) taken out of context but did Angela Basset say "I am queen of the most powerful country in the world and my entire family is gone. Have I not given everything?". Makes me think that Shuri dies (I believe Wright suffered rather serious injury during a stunt?). Again, careful editing can misdirect

I think the actress who plays Shuri is a great actress, her performance in an episode of Black Mirror was great from what I remember. Her performance in BP1 was fantastic too. If they make her the new Queen/Black Panther, it'll be down to how they evolve her character from BP1 to one who is more serious and has that gravitas. Obviously T'Challa's death would be a huge part of that, but they really need to make it work.

As for Angela Bassett saying her whole family is gone, that could be a huge misdirect (which Marvel does in a lot of their trailers). I'd say it's more likely that, as with BP1 where T'Challa loses against Killmonger and is thrown off the waterfall, something will happen to Shuri to make people believe she's dead, before she returns as Black Panther. I'd guess they're setting it up that Angela Bassett takes over as Queen and Shuri just becomes the new Black Panther rather than becoming Queen as well. After all, in Civil War, T'Chaka was King but T'Challa was Black Panther. That would at least help with Shuri's character not having to have the gravitas of being a Queen, but can just focus on the role of Black Panther.

Yeah. They have been so clever in this age of Internet micro-scrutiny. from CGI-in/out Hulk into trailer scenes to CGI-ing Thor's eye in Ragnarok trailer. I mean (Not MCU) they filmed X-Force scenes purely for Deadpool 2 trailer. Well, will be interesting.

One of the tribes of Wakanda is called the River Tribe, and from numerous shots in BP1 and Infinity War when they're flying to Wakanda, there are pretty substantial lakes, waterfalls and a large river going through Wakanda. They may be land-locked, but I'm sure the Altanteans would have no trouble getting there.

But it seems most like the reason for the war is T'Challa's death, leaving Wakanda without either a King or a Black Panther (unlike in BP1 where T'Challa was already Black Panther even when his father died), so I guess Atlantis saw this as their time to strike for whatever reason (just the vibranium or possibly something more).

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,793 ✭✭✭FunLover18

I wonder will Killmonger's destruction of the plant that gives the BP powers also play a role in the plot here.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,017 ✭✭✭EoinMcLovin

What's to say the scene where she says her family is gone is actually set between Infinity War and Endgame since Tchalla and Shuri were both snapped . It could be a flashback

  • Registered Users Posts: 33,804 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Could definitely be something they address, but it's also probably easy enough to explain away. The growth of the flowers came from the vibranium in the ground in the first place, and it's been about 6 years since the plants were burned so they might have been able to grow more since then.

a movie that isn't needed - I personally thought the first BP was absolute muck and we all know why it got so much hype which is good to see I guess but as a movie it was terrible

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,634 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Wakanda has lost two kings, its chief protector and was (presumably) severely weakened in being the frontline of the Infinity War; there's good scope for the country suddenly finding itself beset on all sides - and depths - by those wishing to take advantage of this power vacuum. The big speech by Angela Bassett seems to hint at this.

Now, that's if the film wants to commit itself as a geopolitical intrigue; we know MCU films can be extremely surface-level when it comes to how far it runs with its genre or thematic approaches.

I didn't have a clue to a couple hours ago until I saw Graces breakdown of the trailer but now..

Yeah I think they can breath underwater. This Namor seems to be a "Child of Both Worlds" (TM) and has wings on his feet that I didn't notice.

I don't know much about the Marvel Atlanteans but the general vibe I've got from seeing Atlanteans show up anywhere else if that they tend to be way advanced and powerful. Given the power levels Marvel has been reaching lately, I wouldn't put it beyond them bring their own battlefield, water, with them.

Grace noticed they all needed breather devices but Namor didn't.
