looking at getting back to cycling on my above bike. anyone know what max tyre size I can put on this. looking for comfort for bad country roads

What's on it at the moment? Looking online it seems to be 23mm, maybe? The likelihood is you won't get very much bigger on it, as you'll be limited by the brake caliper, and most likely the fact that larger volume tyre weren't in vogue when the frame was built.

yep 23s on it now. I suspect you're probably right but was hoping for a different answer.

Here's a quick guide to measuring your frame to see what's the max clearance you have. You'll need a Vernier calipers

the brake calipers themselves (if they're sora 3500) are rated to 28mm. as cletus mentioned, the frame may not allow this.
