EU261 when delay on return flight into EU?

I understand EU261 does usually not apply when it involves a non-EU departure airport into the EU with a non-EU airline.

But does it also apply if the Ticket started in the EU, i.e

Outbound flight with SQ from Dub to BKK via LHR & SGP. All went well

Return flight from BKK to DUB on same ticket experiences a technical Issue (delayed arrival of Aircraft) leading to several hour delayed departure from SGP, meaning connection in LHR was missed as well. Overall delay of approx 5 hours in the end.

Any thoughts if EU261 applied here or not?

• If your flight is within the EU and is operated either by an EU or a non-EU airline
• If your flight arrives in the EU from outside the EU and is operated by an EU airline

In this case it's the second option; your return was delayed but operated by a non-EU airline, so you can't claim any compensation through the EU261 ruling.

If you are looking for some compensation, wouldn't hurt to just check in with Singapore Airlines, and see if they want to give you some goodwill compensation, maybe similar to the above or some of their KrisFlyer miles.
