Was sad to hear of the passing of American actress Nichelle Nichols at the age of 89.

As Communications Officer Lt. Uhura in the original 1960s Star Trek series, Nichols broke the barriers at the time for black women, racial minorities and for women in general in the world of television and entertainment. The importance of her visibility and role on Star Trek cannot be underestimated.

Nichols also later acted as a wonderful ambassador for NASA, encouraging girls and racial minority girls in particular to follow their dreams as aspiring astronauts, astronomers and space scientists. Indeed, many women working in space and astronomy today owe their careers to the childhood inspiration of Uhura in Star Trek.

You will be sorely missed but your legacy is assured. Rest well, Nichelle. 💕👍👍

Anyone else have memories of Uhura?

Not into Star Trek but she always interested me, because of the ugly climate at the time for members of minority races, particularly African Americans.

Plus, what a stylish, swinging sixties icon.
