Hey all,

Getting a new storage HDD. HDD, because when they start to fail, I have time to get my data off them. When SDD's fail, that's it.

Looking at the WD_Black series, as it still has the 5 year warranty, so obviously Western Digital are still happy with the quality, but noticing that they're around the €250;ish mark for a 4TB drive. Are they just not making them anymore, or is supply line issues causing the price to be high?

However if reliability is an issue and you're willing to pay 250€ for an HDD, why not get an enterprise drive? You'll get higher capacity and better MTBF:

Toshiba is just an example - they have plenty of competitors; I got an MG07 some time ago and I have no complaints.

If you're that worried about data, you should have multiple backup plans!

1 on-site + 1 off-site is the recommended, e.g. 1 extra/external drive + cloud backup.

Having done enterprise desktop tech support, yeah some of the spinning disks die slow. Others just go instantly.

You're not planning for failure, you're planning for a very specific type of failure.
